Our Analysis

Evo Dog Food is in our list of top dog food brands. Natura Pet Products produces EVO food, using high-quality ingredients like fresh meats, fish, vegetables, and fruits. Their philosophy is to mimic the diet a dog would have in the wild, which means a lot of protein and fat and few carbohydrates. Each formula contains high levels of fresh meat, poultry meal, and fish meal. Meals contain a great deal more protein than fresh meat, as they are not diluted by water.

EVO formulas also contain probiotics, which support a healthy immune system. There are no grains or cheap fillers like wheat, soy, or corn in these formulas. Furthermore, the company manufactures the food under strict quality control conditions, and they have a slew of food quality certifications under their belt. We highly recommend this food as it is has a great deal of protein, plenty of fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals for a healthy canine diet.

The Word on the Street...

Many dog owners are very happy with EVO Dog Food. They like the fact that the food is high in protein and healthy fat, and that the formulas are grain-free. Although it is more expensive than other brands, dog owners report that their dogs eat less of this food. They believe that this is because the food is so high in protein and nutrients, so the dogs are getting everything they need in smaller portions. Pet owners also like the fact that dogs enjoy the taste of the food despite the fact that their are no ‘junk’ ingredients like corn, wheat, or artificial flavors in the formulas.

A few pet owners reported that their dogs experienced diarrhea or vomiting after eating EVO dog food formulas. This may be due to the fact that the formulas are very high in protein and fats. Some dogs cannot handle the richness of the food, particularly the canned wet food.

We do not buy any products made or owned by Procter & Gamble. They perform experiments on animals, so why would in the world I purchase a food product for my pet from such a cruel company?

  • nikki

My dogs loved the red meat formula for the past 7 years. After the recall, they have been vomiting and diarrhea. no longer purchasing this product. Not sure what happened after the recall but my vet made me take them off the food immediately.

  • cazz

I started my two Border Collies on this* in an attempt to quell their BCC (Border Collie Collapse syndrome). One had gotten to the point he would have seizures without much exercise. I chose EVO because of it’s VERY LOW carbohydrate formula. An extremely low carb diet used to be the only treatment for epilepsy, and is still use in cases of children who do not tolerate the medicines.

It’s been over 18 months, and not one seizure in either of my dogs. Before, I could easily induce one by over-exercising them, especially in warm weather. Haven’t been able to anymore, and I’ve tried. These are both working Borders, who are from dis-similar bloodlines.

The manufacturer should look into this.

I will NEVER feed my dog ANY product that this company makes!!!! My dog is sick for eating this crappy food!! Very pissed off!! My business even stopped selling at least part of their products and we will never sell it again! Thank goodness!! My dog is on Precise and loves it!!

  • Teresa

I am not buying EVO anymore. I am moving my German Shepherd Dog to Orijen and rotating with 2 other foods. Such a shame as Shiloh thrived on EVO. However, now she seems as to not want to eat EVO anymore unless it is mixed with something else. So goodbye to EVO and the Proctor and Gamble drama.

“On April 19, 2013, Natura Pet announced it is once again expanding its recall of California Natural, Innona, EVO, Healthwise and Karma dog foods due to possible contamination with Salmonella bacteria.”

  • Claudia

The March 29, 2013 the FDA is withdrawing food evo nd Innova for dogs and cats for possible Salmonella contamination.

  • Matt

My two year old Olde English Bulldogge thrives on it. I rotate the Fish and Red meat formulas monthly. His coat is shiny, great muscle tone, very athletic. He loves the taste too. No problems here, I often wonder if the complaints are due to the fact of over feeding. That stuffs rich.

  • dan

I purchased this food two weeks ago and have spent more time and money at the vet trying to fix their diarrhea issues than the product is worth. I am still in the process of transitioning from one food to the other but would definitely not recommend the dry food be fed to any dog, anywhere. Very, very disappointed in the product as it was spoken of so highly. I even reduced the amount of food as is suggested for this type of food and my dogs cannot tolerate it. I hate that I have had to waste time on replacing rugs, cleaning carpets, and bathing dogs over and over again just to finally figure out that it is the dry food causing their diarrhea; what a disappointing product.

Try a canned food called fruitables with pumpkin. pumpkin actually fixes any kind if of digestive problems. Works wonderfully.

      Dan,
There was a recall on EVO Salmon and Herring recently for salmonella.

  • S.C.

My lab has been on EVO for a few years now with good results (it took us a while to find a food that didn’t upset his stomach and EVO seemed to be it), but lately he’s been vomiting constantly and can’t keep it down. I came on this site trying to find if there have been any recalls and through all of your comments learned that others are having similar issues. Yikes!

    • brooke

YES! I am searching for a solution for my dog. He has been on evo since 2006, with episodes of spit- up here and there. The vet always blamed it on acid reflux. Well suddenly it has gotten REALLY BAD, and the vet has instructed us to try another food. Im looking at taste of the wild- it is just confusing to me what of these ingredients he could be reacting to? all of the high quality foods are pretty similar-

      • aaron

Im not to sure if you read that there is some evo formulas have dairy products. your dog could be lactose intolerant. im not sure but check the type you give your dog and if it does have dairy switch to one that doesnt contain dairy and check

      • ross

Hi ,, My dog has been doing the same thing. Vomiting early am. What food did you switch to. The Vet has no answer

    • Janine

We’ve had our terrier mix and our lab mix on the red bite food for half a year and they were doing wonderfully. We recently changed to the turkey and chicken formula and both are now very sick with diaherrea and our lab is also vomiting.

      • ilse

my dogs also sick. thought it was good for them. not so i have a jackrussel and a leonberger. both diarrhea and throwing-up.

  • Rachel S

I use Wellness brand Core and their 95% canned dog food as a topper. Recently EVO canned 95% was on sale so I bought a few cans figuring it would be similar to what my senior chocolate lab has been eating. Wrong, he’s vomited yellow stomach acid a couple times during the week, we took him to the vet on Friday, he’s on sucralfate 2x a day. I waited a couple days feeding him a bland diet then tried using the EVO chicken turkey canned as a pill wrap, he vomited within a couple hours of administration. The rest of the EVO cans are going back to the store. I don’t even want to drop them at my local shelter for fear of hurting another dog.

PSA- DOG OWNERS who’ve had issues with their “fur babies” suffering from constant ITCHING!!

It’s been a long 7month process getting down to the bottom of Roxy’s skin/itching issues, but the good news is, that thru trial & error we’ve found the answer!

It’s a food allergy to food containing grain…not only that, but any product containing grain fed animals, such as chicken/turkey.

Roxy (my 7 1/2 month old German Shepherd) has been fed PREMIUM DOG FOOD (ORYGEN) accompanied with (organic wet food on occasion mixed w/dry) since day one! The puppy formula only comes in chicken (grain fed), so after alleviating treats made in China/grain fed wet food, her itching subsided significantly, but not entirely.

She didn’t quit itching/scratching completely, UNTIL we transitioned her over to the ORYGEN fish formula (young puppies stomachs can handle it) which is great for the eyes/skin/coat, but stinks to high Heavens & we had a hard time getting her to eat it, unless we mixed it w/rice n gravy…. and even then, she reluctantly ate it. :-\

So, we found a much better alternative (per her Vet’s approval) it’s called EVO-RED MEAT FORMULA (dry food found in most privately owned pet stores that specialize in organic food /treats) it’s the closest thing to their natural diet in the wild & she LOVES it! We buy it in bulk (huge discount) cause it’s kinda pricey (less expensive than ORYGEN though), but well worth it health wise! I hope this helps!

***ALWAYS MAKE SURE YOU FEED IT TO THEM WITH PLAIN GREEK YOGURT (helps their digestion) ON TOP AT FIRST, ALONG WITH MIXING IT. (start w/ 1/4 cup of EVO on the 1st day, then 1/2 cup on the 2nd day, until you’ve completely switched over) W/THEIR CURRENT FOOD DURING THE TRANSITION PERIOD*** OR YOU’LL DEFINITELY BE DEALING W/SERIOUS STOOL ISSUES…NO FUN for you to clean up at all or for our “fur babies”. sensitive stomachs!!!

  • Jennifer

very disturbed to see the reviews of other customers having sick animals. A friend gave me a can of Evo dog food b/c the other can gave her dog diarrhea. We thought her dog just had a sensitive stomach. I gave my dogs the food last night and 3 out of the 6 have thrown up repeatedly. Unfortunately my recycling was picked up this morning so I don’t know the specific product name or batch code but I would NOT recommend using this product and I will not be using again.

  • S. L.

We have a 3 year old cocker/beagle mix who has never been sick and one meal of EVO chicken and turkey small bites dog food has made her miserably ill. She had diarrhea and vomitted all over our house overnight and has felt awful and has continued to have diarrhea all day. I’m returning the food tomorrow and hoping that she will recover without any lasting harm. This food should be removed from the market.

I have 6 dogs. I change food frequently. After introducing Evo to their present food, as I always do with a new food, I switched over completly. Within 24 hours all were sick. The 15 year old had bloody stool. 4 other had the runs. 2 had loose stool. I took the 15 year old to the vet with her sample and 2 others. All blood work and stools were fine…”Stop the food” which I have done!

After using EVO red meat for about 3 months, my dog’s are now starting to have really loose stools. It’s been going on about a week. everything else seems to be alright. Can anyone tell me if they changed the formula in the food recently?

I started using Evo Red Meat with my dog (pitbull)for the time. It’s been two weeks and she is now vomiting. It started with loose stools and I just thought that was from changing her food. I stopped today and will go back to what I gave her before.

More Information

EVO Dog Food

Natura Pet Products is known for making several different types of specialized dog food formulas. EVO has long been hailed as a great standard for dog nutrition. EVO wants to mimic the diet that a dog would have in the wild, and they seem to have accomplished that.

Who is EVO Manufactured By?

The company who makes EVO dog food is called Natura Pet Products. Natura Pet Products was founded in 1992, and makes several different types of pet food formulas. Natura Pet Products has food formulas for dogs, cats and ferrets. They currently sell food (as well as treats) under six brands: Innova, EVO, California Natural, HealthWise, Mother Nature and Karma. In 2010, Natura Pet Products was purchased by Procter & Gamble.

EVO Dog Food Recall

In March 2013, Natura recalled specific formulas of EVO dog food due to Salmonella found in one of the products. Please read about the recall on our blog. On April 19, 2013, Natura expanded the recall for all dry food and treats.

Since recall information may change regularly, it’s always best to search the FDA’s pet food recall list, in order to ensure that your dog’s food formula has not been involved in a recall. We will always do our best to keep you posted on the latest in recall news.

EVO Dog Food Ingredients

The unique thing about EVO dog food formulas is that they are completely grain-free. The philosophy behind EVO dog food is that dogs should be fed on a low carbohydrate, high protein diet that also incorporates balanced nutrition. In the ingredients in EVO dog food, the first 3-5 ingredients are usually meat or meat-based ingredients. The main source of carbohydrates in EVO dog food comes from potatoes.

EVO Allergies

There are no significant ingredients in EVO dog food that are known to commonly cause allergic reactions in dogs. However, if your dog is lactose intolerant, be aware that some EVO formulas contain cottage cheese, which is a dairy ingredient. Also, if your dog has a protein-specific allergy, it’s important that you thoroughly read the ingredients of any dog food formula.
