Great Life Reviews

Great Life Ingredients

Many of Great Life’s dog food formulas are freeze-dried. In their grain-free formulas, tapioca is often used in place of potato as a source of carbohydrates. The protein sources contained in some Great Life dog food formulas include wild salmon, duck, buffalo and free-range chicken. There are several different produce items contained in some Great Life dog food formulas, such as broccoli sprouts, squash, pumpkin, cranberries and artichokes. Most Great Life formulas also contain probiotics and active cultures.

Great Life Allergies

There are no ingredients in Great Life dog food that are among the most common allergens for dogs. However, since many of the ingredients in Great Life dog food are unique and varied, it’s always good to read the entire ingredients label if your dog has a specific type of allergy (such as to chicken or tapioca).

I rescued a very thin six year old boxer that had IBS. After doing the holistic route, the Hill’s route for IBS and doing blood work for allergies that showed no allergies to protein though chicken is what I read most dogs are allergic to which she was eating in Hills, I decided to switch her to Great Life Buffalo no grains/potatoes. It was amazing how her IBS cleared up, she put on 5 lbs., her coat is shiny and she is doing so well. I always give her a large scoop of the canned food as well as I don’t believe in just kibbles and she is thriving. My recommendation is try this as I have used lots of dog foods over the past 30 years but this is the best by far. Claire

    Hello,
I have three Miniture Poodles, two will be two in October the other is seven months. I also have a Standard Poodle that is fourteen weeks.I feed Fromm and Great LIfe in equal parts, the Fromm is fish based and the Great Life is Buffalo, I also add sardiens and tripe to their kibble. One of my older mini’s has gained weight, I am wondering if the great life is to high in calorie due to it saying PERFORMENCE of the package. All the poodle’s are very active they run and play all day at daycare so I am wondering why one would be gaining weight? any thoughts?
    Thanks.

I work at a small dog & cat shop in Portland, OR and have a rescued 10 year old Min Pin/Chihuahua mix who is on Great Life. We’ve gone through several foods in the past year and a half. When I first got him, I was making his food at home then switched to kibble because he seemed to crave the crunch of friends’ dog food when we’d been out. After trying multiple foods, I found the one I love and that he seems to go for again and again. We’d done Blue Buffalo, Acana, Now, Solid Gold, Natural Balance, Instinct, and then Great Life. Many of our customers had spoke of their dog’s coat becoming softer after eating Great Life. I was a bit surprised when my old dog’s course hair got back a puppy-like softness. His energy is high and he loves his food. We alternate protein between Chicken, Lamb, and the LID Duck. I have not noticed anything with him drinking excessively at all. His vet think’s he’s in great shape and I appreciate the stabilized stool consistency. On occasion, for treats, I do add a little bit of raw food to his diet, or a splash of raw goat’s milk, but all in all I’d strongly suggest Great Life.

You stated your dog drinks all the sudden a lot of water and were wondering if it is from “Great Life” food; while I’m a vet assistant and have explored all the natural dog foods on the market; I myself feed Great life to my dogs, but only as a ‘supplement’; I top it with the Fromm food; which is excellent food by the way (never a recall and human grade ingredients; no BPA, no synthetic preservatives; and good for digestion; well balanced); the reason why I don’t give “Great Life” anymore as the only food is because it contains a lot of great things, inclusive Green Mussle. This is very good for the dogs, but things like these could be too much for the dog’s system; and again there are different opinions on the topic. However, if I would be you, I would feed my dog Fromm for a while and see if it still drinks a lot or not. It could be the salt that is in the Green Mussle which activates and somewhat can drain the kidneys (makes them work harder) and that is why it causes them to drink more; it is likely, that is why I feed this food now only as a topic. Additionally, I find the food safe, and of great quality, but some people noted quality issues, such as the knibble sizes vary etc; Fromm is therefore a safer choice, as Fromm appears to be ‘perfect’.

How does nutrisca compare to great life and fromm? I want to feed one meal raw (northwest naturals) and one of kibble (i would do all raw, but i cant afford it).

My nine yr old cocker mix is starting to get kidney issues, anal gland issues, fatty tumors, and poor teeth, thus i need to find a good food. He is also sensitive to grains and potatoes, i believe

      Thanks!

I also feed my two poodles great life. You should soak your kibbles in water before feeding your dog. Your dog will not drink alot of water after eating it this way.

I have had my 7year old Newfie and 12 year old Golden on this food and they seem fine. I have a 5 month old Newfie pup who drinks amazing amounts of water. I am beginning g to think it may be the food. Hmmm

I have put my rescue dog (a Maltese mix)on Great Life grain-free dry duck formula food for the last month or so. He has developed an excessive thirst and I wonder if there may something in his food that would cause this. Do you or your readers have any thoughts on this?

    Thank you.
