Our Analysis

Flint River Ranch claims to make holistic dog food that is packed full of the perfect amount of proteins, vegetables, fruits, herbs, wholesome grains, and additional vitamins and minerals. We agree that the ingredients in the dry food formulas are nutritious and support growth and development, although there are a few ingredients that we think dogs could do without. For this reason, we give Flint River Ranch a rating of four stars. Most of the formulas contain meat meals, such as chicken meal and duck meal as the first ingredient. Meat meals are highly concentrated, as the water has been removed from the meat. This means that they are extremely high in protein, a vital element of any canine diet. The formulas also contain healthy ingredients like millet, flaxseed, chicken fat, fishmeal and chelated minerals. However, some formulas contain wheat flour, which can cause allergic reactions in some dogs, and tomato pomace is considered by some pet owners to be a non- nutritious by-product. All things considered, Flint River Ranch offers an above average dog food.

The Word on the Street...

Flint River Ranch dog food gets rave reviews from pet owners with all types of dogs. People like the fact that the company uses human-grade meats in the formulas and that there are high levels of protein and healthy vegetables and grains in this dog food. The dry food formulas come in small bite-sized kibble bits, so they are easy for dogs to chew and digest. In addition, even picky dogs seem to like the flavors. Many people have commented that dogs with previous recurring skin problems have less itching, healthier skin and shinier coats after switching to this food, and a few people have reported that they make less trips to the vet due to the high quality of this food. The only thing that customers do not like is the price, although the majority of pet owners feel that the price for the food is justified, given the quality of the ingredients.

FirstMate contains tomato pomace, yet Dog Food Review did not list that as “not so good” on the review. So why you list the SAME ingredient in Flint River Ranch as “not so good”?? There certainly is a lack of consistency in your review process. It is also interesting that you listed ingredients for the Original formula, which contains human grade
wheat, and not any of the other formulas that DO NOT contain wheat. Oh, and you failed to mention that the price includes UPS shipping.

One issue to keep in mind regarding Flint River Ranch products and their pricing. It’s shipped to any address in the US! While you may consider it to be “above average” in pricing…you’re not taking into consideration the cost of shipping & handling in the food. Additionally, you don’t mention their oven-baking cooking process. Oven baked foods are regarded as healthier, more nutritious and tastier given the same ingredients and this cooking process. Their formulas are cooked over several different heats to insure the formulas are cooked properly…not just extruded through with steam jets slamming hot water into the ingredients and getting pressed & cut out a nozzle. The slow roasting of their formulas insures that all the ingredients get properly utilized within the formula to make them as tasty as possible. Flint River Ranch also cooks in small batches; as just recently shown when the ovens suffered a breakdown and they ran out of some formulas with a month. Their food is not sitting around on shelves or stockpiled in warehouses. They cook in small, controlled batches. None of which do you touch on.

I have a golden retriever that eats very fast. Will he have problems with your small bites. Do you carry any with large nibble?

I have Samoyeds and have fed Flint River Ranch for 19 years. Your dogs won’t have any problems with the size of the kibble.
