Our Analysis

Purina One Dog Food does not receive a very high rating from us for a number of reasons. To begin with, the dry food contains many controversial ingredients. Although the first ingredient is chicken, the second ingredient is brewer’s rice. This is a particularly cheap cereal by-product that does not contain high levels of nutrients that dogs need. The third ingredient is poultry by-product meal, which could be anything from beaks to feet to ground up bones. Corn and gluten come next. These are generally considered filler materials, and do not supply any valuable nutrient’s to a dog’s diet. Finally, the addition of menadione is a definite negative. This form of vitamin K is believed to cause allergies and liver problems.

All in all, not a very appealing mix. The Wholesome Entrees canned wet food receives a slightly higher rating for its use of quality meats like beef, lamb and chicken. Even so, the wet food still includes animal by-products and lacks sufficient minerals. Although this food is cheap, the low quality ingredients make it a less than stellar choice.

The Word on the Street...

Despite the inclusion of many poor quality ingredients, quite a few pet owners claim that their dogs enjoy the Purina One products. In addition, the low cost is a strong selling point for pet owners. Some say that it is easily digested and that it clears up bowel problems. On the other hand, some pet owners claim that their dogs have suffered skin allergies, vomiting, diarrhea, and gas after consuming this food.

Many dog owners steer clear of this product due to the inclusion of nutrient deficient grains and the lack of probiotics, essential amino acids, and chelated minerals. They believe that the food is very low quality, and that the low price does not make up for the inferior ingredients.

Overall, the reviews are mixed. While some like the fact that dogs find the food tasty, others prefer to choose healthier dog food brands that contain quality meats, vegetables, and added vitamins and minerals.

I purchased the lamb and rice formula. My dog got ill and out of sorts at first, then developed an eye infection. I took her off the food once I noticed the eye issue. A friend actually found the old bag and fed her and the eye issue is back again. This is very upsetting as these pet food companies need to be further regulated.

I bought Purina one beyond chicken and rice for my two Chihuahua mixes and they both got sick. My younger one got chronic diarrhea. They both start developing skin spots and bald spots. From doing research, I believe both of my dogs are allergic to the food. I now have them on Rachael Ray grain free salmon and sweet potato. They’re coats are nice and smooth and their skin is improving. I will NEVER buy Purina again.

We gave our dog 2 tablespoons of the Purina One Smart Blend canned chicken and brown rice with her normal dry food and it made her very ill. She had severe diarrhea and vomiting along with bloody diarrhea. We had to take her to the vets and get a shot, antibiotics, and anti-diarrhea medicine. This all happened within a couple of hours after she ate it. We normally only feed her Iams dry food and Pedigree canned food and have never had a problem.

My 5 month of black german shepherd, Kaiser, got extremely ill from eating purina one smartblend large breed puppy food. I only bought it because they had discontinued his previous food which was purinas original food. He got violent watery diarrhea, vomitting, his mood changed all he did was growl when anyone looked at him or if they walked past him. He lost weight, he was stumbling alot when he was walking. After vet vists I was told his food had made him sick. He is still not back to normal. My brothers 8 year old rottie is sick as well from purina products now. One of my cats has been sick for a while using purina products. My animals are now eating Solid gold (wolf cub for the puppy and indigo moon for the cats). I WILL NEVER give my animals anything purina related again. after alot of research about this food i have seen MANY animals that have died, or are now blind, can’t walk, have seizures etc etc etc. Something is clearly wrong with this batch of food. Animal owners, educate yourself on this food before you feed it to your pets.

I switched my dog to purina one, lamb and rice and he has been sick since the first night we fed to him!! I thought maybe it was just stomach issues from switching foods, so I’ve been blending his food with white rice. I just googled purina reviews and cannot believe all the poor sick animals from this food!! I tossed the purina and put him back in his other food. We’ll see how it goes, hope he gets better soon!

More Information

Purina One Dog Food

Purina is a very well-known brand name among most dog owners. Each day, thousands of people across the country purchase Purina One dog food. The marketing for Purina One uses such phrases as “provide healthy changes that you can see” and “promote a lifetime of good health”. However, is Purina One dog food really a nutritious option for your dog’s health? Here is some information to help you to understand if Purina One is right for your dog.

Who Makes Purina One?

The company who makes Purina One dog food is called Nestle Purina Pet Care Company. The company is the result of a merger between Nestle’s “Friskies PetCare Company” and the Ralston Purina Company, which took place in December of 2001. The headquarters of Nestle Purina PetCare are currently located in St. Louis, Missouri.

Purina One Dog Food Recall

According to current information, Purina One dog food is not involved in any pet food recalls, and is not listed on the FDA’s pet food recall list. Always check the latest updates to make sure that your dog’s food has not been involved in a pet food recall.

Purina One Ingredients

Most of the Purina One dog food formulas contain a protein source as their first ingredient (such as chicken, beef or salmon). However, some of the other ingredients contained in many Purina One dog food formulas include corn gluten meal, brewers rice, poultry by-products, salt, whole-grain corn, soybean meal and animal digest. Some of these ingredients, such as wheat, are often classified as “fillers”, and may contribute to a higher carbohydrate content than is suitable for a dog’s digestive system.

Purina One Allergies

There are several ingredients contained in Purina One dog food formulas that could cause allergic reactions in some dogs. Since many dogs are allergic to corn, ingredients such as corn and corn gluten meal could induce an allergic reaction. Soy and wheat are two other allergens that are contained in many PurinaPlan dog food formulas. Since the protein sources in Purina One dog food aren’t very unique (chicken, beef, fish), they could cause allergic reactions in dogs that have protein-specific allergies.
