Rachael Ray Dog Food Reviews

What's not so good about this pet food

    Our Analysis

We stand divided on Rachael Ray Nutrish dog food, which is why we only give this brand 3 stars. We like that the formulas contain meat or meat products at the top of the ingredient list, as dogs need a great deal of protein in their diets for optimum health. In addition, egg products and healthy vegetables add additional protein, fiber and nutrients. However, we find that both the wet and dry versions of this brand contain a number of controversial ingredients that offer little nutritional value for dogs. For example, brown rice is not necessarily bad for dogs, but it offers few vitamins, minerals or proteins. In addition, the use of corn, soybean meal and pasta made from wheat flour can cause problems for dogs with allergies. Overall, Rachael Ray Nutrish dog food is just an average brand, and although it is cheaper than many other premium dog foods, you may want to consider paying a bit more for a dog food with fewer fillers.

    The Word on the Street...

The reviews of celebrity Rachael Ray’s dog food line, Rachael Ray Nutrish are very mixed. On one side, pet owners are saying that their dogs love the taste of the food and exhibit shiny glossy coats, high energy levels and solid stools after switching to this brand. People also like the fact that this food is very good value for the money, and that you can choose between many flavors of dry and wet formulas. On the other hand, some dog owners have reported that their dogs have had health problems after eating this food, including diarrhea, vomiting, itchy skin with rashes and even bladder stones. Although it is difficult to prove that the food is the culprit, many of these dissatisfied customers feel that this food is not good for dogs, especially those with allergies, and they do not recommend buying Rachael Ray Nutrish products.

I bought this for my cat for the first time a month ago. She got a sore throat stopped eating and two weeKS later I had to put her down. Coincidence? Cat food should never be the reason our pets get sick and die.

    • Sharon P

my girl has been eating it for some time now, she started urinating a lot and within a day or so has blood in it. after a 10 day cycle of antibiotics she seemed better for a week or so and i noticed it was taking awhile for her to produce any urine when she tried to go. today i had an x-ray done and there were 3 VERY large bladder stones that were there! the vet seemed to think it was the Rachel Ray and now i get to pay for an expensive operation, which is really the least of my worries, she is 9 years old and first off i dont want her to be in any pain, but at this point she will be until she has surgery, and certainly will be after for some time, and secondly i dont want to possibly lose her, and thirdly, i dont want her to be in pain. i am sorry you are all going through similar fates, i will pray for you and your pups.

Started my dog on this food about 6 months ago (dry chicken and vegetables. She recently started throwing up, took her off the food, got anti-nausea shot, and she improved. Re-tried the nutrish again, she threw up all night long and dead 2 days later. Don’t know if its the food but can’t help but wonder….

Its the food! I tried the food with my Lab just about a week and a half ago and she hasn’t been the same since.Spent Almost a thousand dollars at an emergency vet and she was improving with a bland diet. I just started mixing in her Just 6 dog food and she is sick again! I didn’t know it was the dog food until now. I will never buy any of these products again!

    • Chelle82

We feed our dogs Just 6 and have had no issues at all, just good results as they have lots of energy and their coats are super shiny.

    • Kellie

I have fed my Labrador retriever RR just 6 for well over a year and have never had a problem. 2 weeks ago when I went to but his food the store was out of Just 6 so I purchased the Nutrish (beef) which I have done before. Since switching my poor baby has not been himself. He’s not as active has been throwing up off and on, not eating regularly, and now has diarrhea. I can’t help but think it’s the food. He has done great on it for quite some time but now after this and seeing how many others are having the same issues I’m thinking its time to switch foods.

      • LuvMyMutt

Did you try to transition him? Some dogs can’t take an abrupt switch. If the problem started with the new bag so quickly you might have a bad one. Try feeding him chicken and rice to settle his stomach and then try the food again. If he has the same reaction you’ll know for sure. And be sure to complain to the company. Might get yourself a free bag of Just 6 that way.

    • Katelyn

As soon as my dog ran out of her other food, we started feeding her this. and as soon as she started eating it she started getting diarrhea.

    • Debi

I have a great dane and a doxie mix, both were doing wonderful on RR Nutrish for almost 2 years, just recently though they have started with nasty gas, and dull fur, I am just wondering if the formula changed?

    • CindyGregg

My Boxer developed Hives after a few months on this dog food, we had to give the bag to my sister and buy a different grain free brand from Tractor Supply and his hives went away in about 3 days. My sister is now saying her dog has hives and thought they were bug bites. Really upsetting since I was sooo excited that a grain free dog food was available at walmart .Now i have to find another brand for my cat as well.

Please do not feed your dog this food! Our 6 year old dachshund started on this food 3 weeks ago when we could no longer find Purina One Beyond in our area. He is now suffering from acute pancreatitis which has now caused him to have diabetic ketoacidosis. He has been hospitalized at Animal Emergency and Specialty Clinic in Maumelle, Arkansas since Wednesday, July 2nd. He is fighting for his life. You can read his full story at http://www.gofundme.com/b2746c

Our dog just died last night. After my daughter brought home a new bag of RR Nourish and feeding our dogs four days ago. We are trying to see if it was the food or something else. Four days ago he threw up and it had blood in it. Yesterday he couldn’t walk and would fall every time he he stood up. He had not really wanted to eat since he vomited. His breathing got very laboured by end of night. All of this went on for about an hour and then he past away before my daughter could get to the house to get him to the vet. We are just looking for answers. The vet couldn’t get blood from him to do a tox screen. She said at this point it could have been anything. Our other dog ia starting to show symptoms.
Has anyone else experienced this wirh your dogs?

      • Amanda Taylor

I am so very sorry for the loss of your dog. Our dog has been in the hospital since Wednesday, July 2nd! We were told Thursday night that he would not likely make it until morning. He was diagnosed with acute pancreatitis which is usually caused by food. The only change in his diet was a switch to Nutrish 3 weeks ago. He began having excessive thirst, excessive urination, weight loss, and vomiting. After reading other stories and reviews about this food, I am convinced this is the cause of his problems. He is still in critical condition and is now suffering from diabetic ketoacidosis as a result of the pancreatitis. I am hoping some of you who have had the same terrible experience will share our gofundme page at http://www.gofundme.com/b2746c

Our dog Max has been on this food for about 6-8 weeks now. over the last 2 weeks he as repeated thrown up, ate less and on 10/13/14 he started pooping red stools many times in one day. After reading these reviews i am very concerned for my Max. There needs to be a major recall and check on this Dog Food. Please, if you love your Dog as much as I do, invest in a different brand until this is resolved.

For those that lost your pet, I am so very sorry. May God Bless you and your family.

      • Sharon P

this just recently happened to my male Golden, when he started falling i had him checked and there was a mass on his spleen, when it finally reached its plateau so to speak, his breathing was just like your dog’s and he passed away. i never thought it could be the food because this is a common fate of many goldens, but now that my female is having her own issues, (i posted above) which is almost 100% caused by her food im wondering if it could have triggered something he y have otherwise not gotten. so sorry for your loss, i completely understand how lost and crushed you are.

    • Steve Spurr

my dog died on this food after the second bag

i am wondering if the food contians menadione because her red o blood cells were destroyed she went from being fine to 3 days later dieing at 7 yrs which was early for this bread and was my best friend in the world.

    • Dennis Daniel

Have not changed my dogs diet and she is 2 years old boxer lab mix. Gave her one Rachel Ray Nutrish soup bone and after an hour she had the shakes, vomiting, diarrhea and a temp. She had displayed no symptoms prior to this and was playing with my children.

I have saved this product and will have it tested. It is my firm belief that this product is not good for our adopted children and if Rachel Ray values her name she should pull it from the market.

If I find this product to be the reason my dog suffered I will do everything in my power to bring it to the attention of the people as well as those who are suppose to be regulating these products.

    • Gizzy

Our dog is so sick on this food!!! Switched to home cook food and he is doing better!!!

    • Terri

I think it’s unfair not to separate regular Rachel Ray dog food and the Just 6 brand. I am so sorry to hear about other dog’s bad experiences, but Just 6 is the only dog food that my Pomeranian can even tolerate. This includes all the expensive Petsmart and Veterinarian only sold products. He is allergic to both wheat and corn, and Just 6 is the only dry food he will eat.
I used to make all his food myself for several years. He gained quite a bit of weight and my vet was concerned for his health because of a collapsing trachea. After finding Just 6, he lost the weight and is now a healthy dog.
I couldn’t give it 5 stars on availability though,. We live in a rural area and I have to order it from Amazon, but it was a lifesaver for us.

    • Ben

This food made My dog very sick!! Hair loss skin problems vomiting and overall lethargic. I put her on a raw food diet 2 weeks ago and She is back to her old self skin cleared up no more vomiting she has clear eyes and is full of pep I would never feed this to any dog

Yes we are very protective of our baby- dog but there isn’t any reason
to be mean. I like others would like to know what we can feed our Bichon as many dog foods have been recalled and he is a picky eater
to begin with and has allergies besides being one for those that have
allergies he has them as well.
So if you know of any safe Food please let all of us know.

OK, we have two dogs. A lab/catahula leopard mix and a boxer/lab/pitt bull mix. They were on Natures Recipe Venison and rice dry food. This stuff is very costly and our lab/catahula mix was not doing well on it. I spied Rachel Ray’s nutrish and decided to give the chicken and veggie a try (we were out of the other all together) Now, there was no introducing of the new food. Neither dog had any issues and our BO finally put on a few needed pounds. They have been on it now for a year with no trouble. The vet reviewed the ingredients and was satisfied. If your dog has an allergic reaction it is not the foods fault. I am allergic to berries…..does that make it the fault of the strawberry?

Dogs eat poop too, remember? The food is crap.

Nutrish Dry Dog Food Almost killed my Pomeranian. He developed seizures, massive hair loss, and severe stomach cramping. He would yelp uncontrollably from the pain. I was afraid of losing him. I have a pending FDA report. Stay away from Nutrish. It almost killed my dog. Nutrish will not answer inquiries either.

      • matt

Our pomerainan had the same experience. Did you get anywhere with the company?

      • Sandra

I began feeding my Pomeranian RR Nurish with no issues for a couple weeks. Two weeks ago I came home to find he had bloody diarrhea all over the house. We immediately took him to the vet and he was put on boiled chicken and rice for a couple days. All issues went away. Fast-forward one week, and all the symptoms are back. Went back to the vet and this time they ask he he got into poison or chemicals, the answer was no (we have a drop cam and watch him all day). He never ate anything other than the soft food from the RR Nutish line.
We immediately threw all of the RR food out and he is on HillScience ID food and he has returned to normal. He is a 12 year old Pomeranian and we would have been devastated if this turned out worse. If your dog shows symptoms, please see a vet immediately.
