Our Analysis

Meow Mix Cat Food is like junk food for cats as it tastes good but has little nutritional value. With inferior ingredients at the top of the list as well as the addition of artificial colors and controversial brewer’s yeast, we have no choice but to give this cat food a low rating.

To start with, the first two ingredients on the list are ground corn and corn meal. These supply no essential vitamins or nutrients to a cat’s diet. Chicken by-product comes next, which is a less than ideal form of protein as it is made up of the bits of the chicken that are unfit for human consumption. Salmon meal and fish meal do provide better forms of protein, but they are not the main ingredients and do not provide a satisfactory amount of protein for a healthy cat. Furthermore, the artificial colors are unnecessary, and the addition of brewer’s yeast can cause allergies in cats.

The Word on the Street...

Despite the inferior ingredients in Meow Mix Cat Food, cat owners claim that their pets go crazy for this food. Just like with junk food, sometimes the things that are the least healthy can be extremely delicious. Cats love both the dry and wet versions of this food. In addition, the super low prices are very appealing to cat owners on a budget. A pack of 48 cups of wet food at 2.75 ounces each retails for about $25-$35.

However, many cat owners refuse to serve this food to their cats simply for the ingredient list alone. The low quality meats, fatty beef tallow, and added chemicals for color are a big turn-off for those who strive to feed their cats natural foods that are high in protein. Many people believe that although cats seem to love the taste of this food, it may be better as an occasional treat rather than a staple diet.

As a general rule of thumb. Don’t buy pet foods you can find in a grocery store. I work in the pet industry and the term “grocery foods” is used to describe food that is likely to kill your pet but people buy it because it is cheap.

My best friend and I have both been feeding our cats Meow Mix. The first small bag I bought for my Sasha didn’t bother her. The larger bag has been making her and my best friends cats sick. Bad batch perhaps? Our cats don’t vomit with anything else. Sasha cries out in pain before she vomits. Then it’s all day. Last night I fed her some of my steak and she didn’t get sick. She’s been jacking my popcorn too. Not getting sick from that either. I’ve been dealing with a bad case of vertigo for the last 24 hours and shouldn’t be driving. Sasha has to be fed so I went to the store and bought her some different cat food. Wouldn’t feed her until I got her something else. She ate the new food I got her and she’s doing great so far. No more Meow Mix for our cats. Not going to risk our babies lives. I work for a veterinarian so I’ll be having him test the Meow Mix.

I feed my perfectly healthy cat from a freshly opened bag of meow mix dry food tender centers, tuna and whitefish flavor on the morning of sat May 2, 2015 and left for work. When I came home he had been vomiting and withdrawn with moaning. I think he is experiencing internal bleeding (signs of blood) and tried to vomit what looked like foam sun morning. My husband said the cat had been throwing up the cat food. He is in a lot of pain and looks really bad. Just lying behind the desk and looks really really bad. I have a whole bag that can be tested. Pray that my cat survives. I love him so much. Will call vet first thing and of course calling meow mix and trying to get the word out. Don’t take a chance with meow mix if you love your pets. Although he has eaten this brand for years, I think I got a bad batch. It very well may kill him. So sad that I had not heard about the low quality of this product before now. Definitely do NOT recommend this product at all. Just returned from an emergency visit to vet early mon may 4. He passed away when the vet was inserting a Cather in him which pushed the fluid up and he had a seizure. Said he had a blockage in his bladder and couldn’t urinate. Vet said low probability it was the meow mix, but I believe it was too much of a coincidence. Followed up with meow mix and they said they wanted a sample to test. Rest in peace Marley. You will forever be in my heart. If anyone is reading this, I would like to say this, if your cat suddenly starts to vomit and becomes withdrawn and moans (cries out to you). DONT wait a day or two to see how he does before seeking care. I may have saved his life if I had rushed him to emergency care sat night instead of waiting till Monday morning when vet opened. Even though I was there first thing when they opened vet said he had a 50/50 chance of making it and odds would have been better if I had got help sooner.

My dog died in 2006 and i promised to never have any more pets because I was so depressed. Well a starving feral cat showed up in my backyard in 2011 so I felt sorry for it and bought it some Meow Mix Original Dry food. Ive been feeding it and 15 of its friends for 4 years now and they are all healthy and active. I have no idea how this can get such a low score.

I recently rescued a lost/stray cat about a month ago, and was very low on cash. We have no no-kill shelters in my area. I bought another brand of dry food, something owned by purina, owned by nestle. Cat threw up almost every day. Much of nestle’s stuff doesn’t sit well with me either.

Went to the store and looked at all the ingredients on everything there. Refused to get anything Purina. Even the premium dry foods seemed to have very little meat and a lot of grains and by-products. Meow mix had the most actual meat ingredients even among wet foods there. I bought only seafood, trying to avoid chicken from china. The cat seems about 5-8 years old. Ever since switching she has had more energy, been more affectionate. She hasn’t thrown up. Nothing is wrong with her stool.

    This is very confusing.

I bought meow mix center tender and fed my 7 years old cat. He vomited them all. He was sick for a few days. Also he has skin irritation now. I changed to purina food for indoor cats, and since then he stopped vomiting.
I don’t recommend meow mix tender!!!

  • cat

Now I know why my cat was throwing up every night. I was feeding him meow mix dry. Since I changed him to a better quality of food he has not thrown up but twice in over a month when he ate too much. It was not nearly as bad as when he threw up Meow Mix. I have another cat that will only eat meow mix wet food he seems ok but I am not going to give him junk to eat anymore!!! I love my cats they are my family. My other cats eat purina friskies brand with high protein and low carbs.

We believe that my cat has died from eating this product, our vet is thinking it also. She would try to jump an she would fall, she couldnt walk she was freezing. She lost a lot of weight her daughter lost control of her bladder was throwing up all the time also lost a lot of weight and half of her hair. We were going to put her down the next day since it was so horrible but she has passed away on her own the next day right when my dad got up to take her. Since the vet also didn’t know the cause of it they told us to scrub down the liter box, water bowls an food bowls for her daughter an my 3 dogs wouldn’t get it. We have been trying to figure out why she died an we think it may be because of this. Every time her daughter ate this prodcut she would throw it up 5 minutes later. We never thought about it before, they both stopped eating the products we couldn’t get them to eat anything else so we would search up what we could feed them for human food wise we finally gave them human food that was making them gain more weight an some of their hair back no more puking for her daughter but it was to late for the both of them. We had to put her daughter down since it has got so bad with her bladder an throwing up.

  • Disgusted

While pouring the last bit from a large bag into my cat’s bowl, I noticed a very bad odor at the bottom. Out of the bag came a chunk of dry food which was stuck together, about the size of a lemon. This offensively smelling chunck of food was mushed together in a ball of some type of animal manure. I’m sick to my stomach. I put it in an airtight bowl. I guess I should call the company tomorrow. Can anyone give me any input?

  • Justme

My three cats eat meow mix dry food along with other brands ( none of the overpriced supposedly “natural”, ” premium” brands) and they are perfectly happy and healthy!! They are 12-14 years old and when I did try some of the more expensive food when they were younger, it sat in their dishes untouched. Many of you seem to enjoy blaming this food even if it probably isn’t the reason why your kitties got sick.

  • Alayna

Okay so I bought the pate toppers seafood and poultry wet food variety pack 3 days ago. One of my cats started vomiting foam and blood on the day after. I first thought it was due to giving her well water instead of purified water, but she kept throwing up after switching back to purified water. I stopped giving her the food yesterday, she seems to have gotten a little better. She stopped vomiting blood and now it’s just clear and she hasn’t thrown up since this morning. My other cat doesn’t seem to have any problems with it but I read where some have lost theirs due to this brand and I discontinued feeding her this wet food as well. Please do NOT buy this food for you furbabies.

  • Ashley

Started feeding my 1 yr old cat the meow mix tender centers. Being a Vet Tech I knew better than to feed a lower quality food with lots of fillers and by products, but being in a hard desperate situation I decided to go with a cheaper food and try the meow mix. Within 24 hours of eating the new food my cat became VERY lethargic, vomiting blood and bloody diarrhea. $150 in vet bills later (would have been much more had i not been an employee) he seems to be doing better and is back on purina naturals! No matter how tight money is I will NEVER feed meow mix again.

  • Chris Doko

So yeah, your food killed my 12 year old cat, and left her kitten severely ill. I swear if the kitten dies im coming after you! Shame on you! Both cats have severe vomiting, blood in vomit, foam vomit and are left very weak and with a UTI. The mother like I said died, thus you killed a part of my family. If I have to take you to court I will, as I still have 2 bags of your food which Im sure is what caused this tragedy. What a huge travesty undertaken by your corporation.

    • Carol

This just happened to my cat this week. SAME symptoms right after eating a new bag of meow mix tender center dry cat food. Vet said he had a UTI. He died at the vet office when they tried to insert a Cather. If you go to court, I’ll go with you!!!
I still have the bag of food. I think it is the high ash content in cheap cat food that caused the blockage in his bladder. How many other cat owners has this happened to? Are you out there? Are you ready to take action? Why is this so easy to slip thru the cracks?

  • Barbara Sue

We just lost a sweet baby boy, 3 months old. He was fine one day, bloody diarrhea the next. He was gone in two hours. I had switched to Meow Mix a few weeks before since a friend was having good luck with it for his older Siamese. My 12 year old was throwing it up off and on, my 11 year old started having nasty stools. We switched them, but my other cats seemed fine but not looking as healthy. We thought the baby had somehow gotten into something. Now I think it was the Meow Mix. Back to Purina. It works best for them.

  • Guest

Purchased meow mix tender centers September 25th and my cat dies on the 29th four days later. Is it the food? Read a few other comments saying that this brand might have killed their cats days later as well and the company should be contacted about this.

  • twigs

I lost 2 cats to meow mix 3 weeks apart. thats all they ate. please dont feed your cats meow mix..this is heart breaking that companys you trust get away with killing our pets. NEVER AGAIN! SHAME ON DELMONTE

  • Ted

The 12 cup variety pack wet Meow Mix doesn’t say anything about corn meal or any of these other ingredients. It says crude protein. Is that the same as corn meal??

    • CrazyCrab12

crude protien is the percentage of protein in the food. You are not looking at the ingredients list. You are looking at the nutritional facts. For cats, you want as much protein as possible(from meat, not plant protein)

True Story: I once read a “We Need Help” request in Craigslist Pets.
A family said they and needed food for their cats until their next paycheck. i obliged, bought their regular brand of CHEAP
super-market brand dry food then delivered it to the family. Upon delivering the food, I was shocked. I didn’t expect to see such UNHEALTHY indoor cats. The cats had dull & shedding coats. And I mean DULL!!!! Not even a hint of shine. EVEN THEIR EYES WERE DULL LOOKING, 1 had tumors under his skin. These sweet cats weren’t thin & weren’t old. Another thing, this family appeared to have all the creature comforts for themselves, lots of food, toys, electronics, clothes, but didn’t know / care enough to provide quality food for their cats.
Wow, I had no idea that quality food made such a difference. By contrast our cats (7 of them) were active bright & shiny, but we had always fed them what we considered to be the best at the time (usually Holistic/Natural grain free brands).

MY POINT – PAY EXTRA FOR QUALITY FOOD. THE JUNK AT THE SUPER MARKETS IS JUST ENOUGH TO KEEP YOUR PETS ALIVE BUT NOT HEALTHY.
here are some brands that we have / do use for our dogs and cats.
Earthborn / “Go” (out of Canada) / Tikki Cat / Almo Nature / Diamond Brand. There are many other good quality brands out there. Many of these quality brands can be found at Feed Stores (Horses & Cattle) Anyway, good luck and remember it is your responsibility and duty to give up something that you want to feed your pet quality food.

  • Miss Kitty

The recipes for the wet Meow Mix seems to have changed. The broth is watery & the “meat” appears much more processed than just a few months ago. My cats used to gobble this stuff down, but not anymore. I suspect corporate profit margins are the reason. I’m not fooled. No more Meow Mix.

  • Liz Hood

I bought Meow Mix Tuna and Whitefish dry food–and have had 3 of my cats throw up. One threw up again yesterday even though she hasn’t had any for over a week now–and this time it was pure blood. It was too late to get her to the vet last night when I found it. She goes today. One of the other 3 had had bloody mucus in her stools–she went yesterday to the tune of $132. I will NOT buy Meow Mix Tune and Whitefish again–and recommend that no one else buy it. I fear I am going to lose both the 14 year old with bloody mucus yesterday and the 10 year old that threw up blood late yesterday evening. I am waiting to see if any of the others throw up blood. or have bloody stools. I will not buy Meow Mix products any more including the Anti-hairball which they love. I will buy something else for them.

    • Carol

Oh my gosh, this just happened to my cat this weekend. Fed him exactly the same thing?? Why do they keep selling this poison and we buy it unknowingly. Shouldn’t there be a warning on this product or a recall? My cat is very very sick and may not pull through.

  • ssohara

I have always fed my cat premium dry food (the expensive stuff which has meat and not by-products as the first few ingredients) – both wet and dry supplemented by people-food treats (an ounce of raw salmon or tuna or sardines). She gets one can of wet food in the morning and her treat in the evening and she munches on as much dry food as she wants throughout the day.

Anyway, she is 20 this year. Last year she was really off her diet, and I researched what foods taste best to cats. Meow Mix is at the top, so I switched her to their dry food. I still give her the expensive wet food and the people-food treats. The reason I did this – I just wanted her to get more calories.

Here is the thing – I know Meow Mix is like the kitty version of eating potato chips. it is NOT a health food. However, my kitty is already 20, so I figure at her age – let her eat whatever makes her happy. I take her for annual vet check-ups and she is very healthy, the only problem she has is some arthritis so I give her cosequin.
Would I recommend Meow Mix to someone with a kitten. Absolutely not. However for my particular case, it seems to work. My cat stopped losing weight and regained her appetite after I switched to Meow Mix. She does throw up more than she used to but it’s a good trade-off given that she was getting very thin.
However, I do not give her ONLY Meow Mix. I do still give her the high quality wet food and her evening meat treats…

mel stay away from Kit n Kaboodle .. we just had 3 die ?

  • Mel Franklin

i recently bought a bag of meow mix and on june 6th one of my cats passed away and today another one of my cats passed away and my last one is skin and bones .i will never buy another bag of cat food or tell anyone else to buy this brand

    • Matthew Cahill

How sad. Sorry for that. I was wondering about this stuff. I just bought a bag and my cat, who usually goes crazy for this stuff, will not go near it. I will throw it out right away. You have helped my cat. Thanks.

      • Mel Franklin

your very welcome i lost all 3 of my cats within a month .its sad that your trust the places you buy your cat food from and it ends up killing your cats

    • Liz Hood

Was the flavour Tuna & Whitefish? 3 of mine have gotten quite sick from eating it. My cats hate Kit and Kaboodle.

  • CastingPearls

My cats usually eat Purina One Metabolic Formula but I was running low and it was before payday, so I bought a small bag of Meow Mix and mixed it in with their remaining Purina One to avoid stomach upset.
They loved the taste (because it’s junk food, evidently) and were sick for days with foul smelling loose stool. Never again. Now I buy larger bags of their favorite and mix a higher end grain-free brand into it and they’re fine.

  • Sylvia Rodriguez

One of my cats, recently died, I don’t know what could have happened to him, he seam healthy. I am now noticing my other cat crying a lot and not eating his food. I also did notice that when he does eat his food, he throws up. I am real worried that Meow Mix has been making him sick. He has eaten Meow Mix all his life. I don’t know what I am going to do. I love my cat and I don’t want him to hurt. I read other reviews and found bad reviews on Friskies and Meow Mix and other brands. What can I do?

  • Lizzie

I am very disturbed by some of these reviews. They can not be real. Jayne says her 13 yr old cat only hate the indoor formula which has not been around that long since I have a 10 yr old cat that has been eating it since they began manufacturing it and it has not been his entire life. He was long past kitten food. Another says their cat bladder was full of crystals despite healthy yearly checks at vet. I have a female cat that had the same problem and she only ate premium dry food. It is caused by not getting enough moisture in diet which can happen with ANY dry food only diet. My vet found the problem in routine check up long before she was displaying any obvious symptoms so I wonder about these healthy check ups this person claims to have had. It amazes me that I have fed this food to the strays for years and the are all amazingly still alive without any vet care. I have some that have been eating it for almost a decade. I mean if it was going to cause cancer or these other horrible diseases would it not get them first. Also it is the biggest selling cat food t both my local Walmart & Target store. I have stopped and asked 100 plus people if they have noticed any symptoms. Not one has. Not a single person. I have 12 pets so I am at the vet office regularly for check ups and flea treatments. Many people are their with cats with similar problems that are on speciality diets from the vet. Foods like Wellness act. So when an animal as the problem on those diets what is it then? I am disappointed that we cannot have honest real reviews available to people instead of paranoia and possible intentional lies. For the record I have had the best of luck with the meow mix formulas. All my cats are very healthy and happy. I have one cat that does not seem to do as well on it so I food him cat chow. I do not blame meow mix I just think it is him.

    • Meg

Thank you for writing an honest review without the use of scare tactics, rumours, or hyperbole.

    • Scottie Payne

Yes, last time I had a pet was 1980. On 6/6/2014, two stray cats showed on my patio that were starving! It was 110 degrees that day so I could not ignore them.

These cats are hard core bird hunters who were down on their luck. It looks like they have gained about 5lbs eating Meow Mix, I still cannot get close enough to them to pet them.

They have taken over my patio and feel completely at home now. Between their bird hunting,(I’ve seen the feathers), and Meow Mix I should not have to do anything else, right?

  • Michael

My two month old snowshoe cat, Max, has recently started eating MeowMix wet cat food and has been having runny orangey diarrhea lately! -__-

  • Sunny

After switching my healthy cat to meow mix tenders he began to have blood in his stools. The food was stopped and he was treated multiple times for colitis but he did not survive. My cat was a healthy 16lb Maine Coon and within 4 months he was gone. There are several stories like mine on line including vomiting, blood in stools, weight loss etc. I wish I had not ever fed this to him.

  • Jayne Ludwikoski

My 13 year old cat was diagnosed with oral cancer so I took her to a holistic veterinarian. She was strictly and indoor cat and ate nothing but dry Meow Mix all her life. What a mistake. Where can I get a complete nutritional breakdown of the product including kinds of amino acids? Thank you

    • Lizzie

Obviously Meow Mix did not give your cat oral cancer. Especially since it is not possible your cat only ate the indoor formula because it has not existed for 13 years. You can check and people have the same problems on much higher quality food. In no way can this food cause oral cancer.

  • Tyler

I have done a lot of research over the years about dry vs wet cat food and the content of what is inside. As far as the “cheaper” brands are concerned the wet food Meow Mix offers is not half bad. Cats are carnivores so you want the first 4-6 ingredients you read to be some sort of protein (by-products do not count) Meow Mix does have proteins listed more than most of the brands you can find everywhere. I would suggest in the lower grade brands though feed wet not dry. I feed this to a stray that I care for who loves it eats every bit. My cats personally eat holistic dry and wet foods that are grain free. Not everyone has the means to feed this way so at if you absolutely have to I would say Meow Mix is what I would use. I seriously recommend not getting a pet if you cannot afford to feed them properly though. I view having a pet as having a child you take that responsibility knowing there will be financial cost involved. You would not feed your child animal by products would you? By-products are not things a wild animal even eats. By-products are the beaks and all the parts that normally do not get eaten.

  • Evelyn McNeil

I have fed my cat, Isis, Meow Mix dry food ( both Original and Sea Food) for 14 years and prior to that it has always been a staple for my prior pet cats, one who lived to be 23 years old! Three months ago, she started having dietary problems–vomiting and diarrhea– I stopped giving her any “wet” food and kept up the dry, which occasionally includes Friskies for variety. I took her to the vet for a check up and she is healthy. I subsequently found out from my son who’s cat had also been eating Meow Mix–for 12 years–that his veterinarian told him to stop using the Meow Mix and go to some specialty dry cat food from the pet store. His cat is now fine after two months–so isn’t mine– but after temporararily stopping the Meow Mix and then starting up again twice with the same vomiting results, I have now stopped using Meow Mix dry food! Something has obviously changed in your formula recently. Perhaps you should look into it.

  • Mark M

OK So if you compare Meow Mix with other store brands its actually not AS BAD as they others. That does not mean its not bad for your cat. But if you can’t afford Blue or the higher cost “natural” foods you don’t have a choice I think Meow Mix Tender Favorites is about one of the leading brands for cheap food looking at the ingredients.

  • Sara B

Caution: Struvite/Crystal Formation in Young Cats. My cat was fed Meow Mix Original Dry Blend exclusively for 3 years. In that time, no other dry food was given, as there was never any obvious reason to change her diet, as she continued to enjoy it and exhibited a healthy, active lifestyle, verified by annual vet exams. That was, until she started having accidents that turned into loss of bladder control, and an expensive trip to the veterinarian. There they found she had a bladder full, emphasis on FULL, of crystals, which is uncommon for female cats, and even more uncommon in young cats.

    • Liz Hood

My now 10 year old cat was found to have the same problem 4 years ago. She now stays in a room upstairs with the whole upstairs to run in–but has an old bed covered in shower curtains and puppy pads. She urinates on the puppy pads there as well as sprays the wall. Meow Mix will not be bought again for this household of 9 cats inside and 4 outside.

      • Anna

hope you never plan on selling your house, you are going to need a hazmat team to clean it with 9 cats and 1 with its own spraying room.

  • Susan

I have my two middle aged cats on a grain free diet. I have to buy their food at speciality pet shops and it can get costly. I found Meow Mix Pate Toppers and after reading the ingredients it appears to be grain free. I purchased only the real salmon topped with flakes of tuna (the light blue packaging). Can someone verify that this food is wheat and/or grain free? Is it bad for my cats? Thanks for your help.

PLEASE READ!! About two weeks ago when we started feeding our older kittens the meow mix with fillings, the boy started laying around, not eating, losing weight, gagging, and was VERY weak. We took him to the vet and he had a temperature of 106.4! The vet immediately gave him a shot of penicillin to get the temperature down and to get him better. At first he thought maybe that when he got his paw hurt it could have broke it causing a temp. He then checked Oero (the cat) a test for feline leukemia (which is like HIV that is transferred by sylivia)which he was negative for. After we got home he ate ALOT from the shot and after three days of medication he became more active, but his sister(Izzy) became sick with the exact same thing except she was shaking and having spasms, we called their vet and we brought them back the next morning. He still had no idea what it could be so he gave them each 4 shots of each, their gums were also irritated and blistered from toxins, he said that meow mix has caused MANY symptoms to cats from toxins in it and organs shutting down. We took the food away and are feeding them pate, salmon, and baby food. They are doing better than they were, but still have little ways to go. I WILL NEVER BUY THIS AGAIN AND ENCOURAGE YOU NOT TO, PLEASE.

    • Sunny

My cat has bright red blood in his stools and this started soon after changing to meow mix tenders. I thought he was just getting old but I now realize that something is wrong with this food.

He did not eat the food yesterday or today and he is already acting like he feels better. There is something very dangerous in meow mix.

      • Sunny

This is Sunny and I am writing to tell you that my cat did not survive. DO NOT FEED MEOW MIX TO YOUR CAT!!!

  • ginny entrekin

I had been feeding my cat Meow Mix with no problems. Opened a new bag yesterday and saw something that looked like spider webs falling out of the bag. I looked inside the bag and saw moth type bugs crawling around inside the bag, then several flew out of the bag! I quickly closed it up and returned to WalMart and got a refund. Will never use Meow Mix again. I had no idea what poor quality food this is. For your info the code on the bag was 3172mm081425. If you have this code on your bag of Meow Mix, I would check inside the bag.

  • Michelle

My friend gave me a bag of Meow Mix that she had gotten her cat because it didn’t seem to agree with him (he was throwing up like crazy so she thought maybe he just couldn’t eat it anymore) and after giving one bowl to my cat, she started throwing up. I was telling my husband and he said there must be something wrong with it because the eat-anything stray outside won’t even go near it. Won’t be giving any of my cats this brand EVER again!

  • Shannon

Earlier this month (December 2013) two of my three cats became ill, vomiting foam and bile for hours after becoming ill after their breakfast. I had just opened a new bag of Meow Mix. My cat who did not get sick was the only one who does not eat Meow Mix because she exclusively eats canned food. We discontinued the food immediately, and the cats got better within 48 hours.

We contacted Meow Mix and they are sending a prepaid envelope so we can send them 2 cups of the food for them to analyze. We are looking for a place to have the food analyzed privately for our own information. They stated that there are no active recalls, but it seems there are multiple other cats exhibiting the same symptoms. We are DONE with Meow Mix.

  • Asia

I have been feeding my cat Meow Mix only. My cat started losing weight and then began throwing up blood! Took the cat to the Vet and they did tests and found nothing wrong. Then I found this page and stopped feeding my cat Meow Mix and he is now recovering. I will never buy Meow Mix again!!!!

    • momma kitty

I have 2 cats vomiting blood who have been it all of their lives I’m taking them to the vet in b the morning (bloody vomit started last night ) praying they will recover. Thank you for posting this I’m never giving them meow mix again

  • Erin

The bought we just bought was infested with Moths and larvae! Some moths got out, and laid larvae all along the corners of the ceiling in my kitchen. Do you know what it’s like to have larvae on your kitchen counters in the morning! I had to throw out all the open food in my pantry. I STILL can’t get rid of these moths even though I’ve been finding and killing them. To make matters worse, I have 4 toddlers, and my 4 year old son was the one who stuck his hand in the bag to feed the cat. Moth infestation IN MY HOME! I will NEVER EVER EVER buy anything from this company again. Del Monte is banned in my home. Animal AND people food.

My family works in pest control. This is a problem with the length of time and how this product was stored. Most likely the result of the store you purchased it from keeping it in the back for too long. Very common in stores who have too much over product. Unless you have any other reasons to not buy meow mix, I would reconsider the store. Not Del Monte.

  • Cindy

Just 2 days in from switching to Meow mix. My cat has puked 3 times and I have wiped slightly bloody eye boogers from him. I thought maybe he got into something else but after reading all of these other comments…I’m very leary that maybe it’s the food. I am withholding it as of right now and will go back to Friskies. I will see how he feels tomorrow. Very concerned.

    • Terri

      Hi Cindy,
Please do not feed your cat Meow Mix, we had our 3 yr old cat on that type of cat food and he almost died. The cat had emergency surgery due to total blockage in his ureter tubes and could not urinate, our vet said it was due to his food and Meow Mix is known for that. Im trying to warn everyone I can about this because I do not want to see anyone else go through this with their pet.
      Thanks

I had a lovely 4-year-old Himalayan who was healthy and robust. His only problem was he HATED canned food, and would not eat it. All he ate was kibble, so he got Max-Cat dry cat food. One day I picked up a small bag of Meow Mix at the supermarket because there wasn’t a Petco nearby, and I couldn’t get his Max-Cat. After just a few cups of Meow Mix, he started having trouble peeing, and after he was found unconscious in the hallway by my petsitter while I was out of town, the emergency vet said his urethra (urinary duct) was blocked by crystals. They saved his life, and he went onto a urinary health food supplied by the vet. Unfortunately, spending 2 days unable to pee had damaged his kidneys beyond control, and he went into complete renal failure about 4 weeks later, and had to be put down.

ALSO, my brother had a lovely little calico cat that started out as a feral, but later became an inside-outside cat. My brother always fed her Meow-Mix, because it was cheap and she liked it. She was always the skinniest, scrawniest little cat you ever saw, with thin, dull fur. My brother moved away, and my mom kept feeding the cat Meow Mix. Finally, when Mom was getting too old to care for the cat, my sister, who took over the cat’s care for my mom, started feeding her a high-quality food she buys at her vet (brand not known to me) that she fed her own two male cats because of prior urinary tract symptoms. When I saw that little calico about a year later, I couldn’t believe the difference in her. She was sleek, shiny, and no longer scrawny. My mom has since died, and the cat is now a 100% indoor cat, living with my brother again, and I think she’s something like 14 or 15 years old, now.

Long story short: Meow Mix isn’t a very good choice!

However: I’ve been reading this site all evening, and nearly every brand, high quality or low quality, seems to have people complaining about vomiting, diarrhea, and struvite crystals. Many said the cat food they were using had the formula changed. If just about every brand is making cats sick, I have two suspicions:
        (1) That the change in diet wasn’t gradual enough. Cats can have pretty sensitive stomachs. Maybe in most cases the cats were abruptly switched from one food to another?
        (2) More unsettling is the worry that ALL pet food, especially cat food, has had some kind of a change that is adversely affecting the animals eating it. I wonder if there’s a common denominator in terms of an ingredient that EVERY commercially produced cat food has, that’s causing all this illness. Perhaps the preservatives?

Just bought a bag for my cats 2 months ago- poured and sealed in a new container and now I have moths flying out of the container!! NOT GOOD! Lost my business for life.

    • Erin Corral

      Dan!

I had the same thing happen. The inside of the bag was littered with moths, and larvae. I’m still trying to get the moths out of the house. I keep finding larvae up by the corners of the ceiling in my kitchen.

I will NEVER NEVER NEVER buy this cat food again. How disgusting.

  • Robin Bruening

I was thinking of trying meow mix for my cat because she likes soft treats so much and I thought the tender centers. Would. Be just the ticket for her. After reading about. All. The sick cats I wouldn’t put this food anywhere near me baby.

  • Mike

We just happened to buy a bag of Meow Mix last week and both my inside cat and my outside cat are vomiting all over the place. At first I thought it was just the inside cat that had gotten into something. But yesterday and today I noticed the outside had thrown up all over the porch. They have loved Meow Mix before although it’s been awhile since we have bought it. I will be contacting them tomorrow.

  • Gabe

Found maggots in Meomix Tenders, October 23.
    Brand new bag.

  • Claire Landry

I have been using MeowMix Tender Centers for a few months now. I opened a new bag last week and one of my cats got very sick! Took him to the vet yesterday and he is on antibiotics, but he still won’t eat the food!
Yesterday after that, I got home to find my other cat very sick throwing up etc. now she is throwing up blood in the little bit of water she drinks. All last night I was dealing with a two sick cats!
I’m on my way to the vet with cat number two!
I don’t know if its the food, but they both are very sick.

  • Josh

Last few bags I bought have been fine. But one bought from walmart in November makes 2 of my cats have diarrhea and go outside litter box purchasing new food.

  • Dawn

Our Kitty was not eating and spent the last three days in kitty hospital with level three kidney failure. We brought him home tonight ran up to the store to get some supplies and all the meow mix the only thing that he likes had been pulled from the shelf. Now reading the post I can’t help but think the food is the culprit. How is this not on the news???

  • tara

My cats LOVE this stuff. I know it’s junk food, but it’s the only thing that keeps them coming back home. They are outdoor cats that live in the jungle and they take care of most of their own nutritional needs (hello birds, lizards, frogs, more birds, giant bugs. and, their favorite, mice). This stuff is like their dessert, I suppose…

  • bill

been feeding our kitten tuna and shrimp for months now the food is a dark red and gave her diahrea, taking back to store our pet deserves better than crap just to keep profits up I see we are not the only ones disappointed with the lack in quality

  • Anna

Our cat has been eating it for a few years and we just bought a new bag. He’s been throwing up and will not touch it will a ten foot pole. Something changed and it made him sick. Stewie is a voracious eater and he will not go near his dish if Meow Mix is in it. After reading all these recent comments, why on earth is there not a recall?? Clearly something is wrong and it’s making our kitties sick.

    • Anna

I contacted Del Monte about what happened with our cat and notified them what I had found online recently with similar stories. They sent me a prepaid envelope to send them 2 cups of food and told me they would let me know of their findings. We’ve since changed Stewie to Purina ONE Beyond – Chicken/Oatmeal. We had to ease in with some wet food mixed in, but he’s fully transitioned to the new food and it feeling much better.

  • Krissy

I bought my cat meow mix and now both my cat and dog are puking everywhere (the dog likes to sneak cat food). Why isn’t there a recall after all I have read?!

  • Zabu

We have fed our cats the savory morsel little tubs as a treat for about three years. Our one little kitty won’t eat anything else. Just last week (September 16) I bought two 12 packs from Target and they won’t touch the stuff. Our kitty that isn’t used to other foods is getting so skinny it’s scary. Anyhow I found an older tub in our travelling pack and offered it. They devoured it in minutes. So something has changed and it’s not in a good way. After reading here I will be making my own cat food. I’ve had to make my own dog food for over 2 years since Buffalo Blue did the same thing. One day they loved it the next day they wouldn’t touch it.

  • Danny Hendrix

My 7 cats LOVE Meow Mix! It’s like crack to them! I’ve never had the tiniest problem with them not eating it or getting sick from eating it. It’s a quality product. I have tried several other brands, name brands and cheap stuff, but the cats just don’t clean it up as fast or eat as much. I think it’s the best dry cat food out there and will continue to keep my cats happy by feeding it to them! Thanks for a great product! Danny

  • Kristie

Just bought my bag of Meow Mix Tender Centers for my cat on Saturday (it’s now Monday) and my cat is throwing up all over the place and won’t eat anything. After he’s thrown up 6 times in my house, he is now under my bed. What a great food you guys made!!!! NOT! I will be bringing this back to the store for a refund and getting another food! I will never make this mistake again!

    • megan

We got the same kind and our cats had temperatures of 106.4, blistered and bleeding gums, not eating, very weak, shaking, and spasms. They have to take penicillin and the vet said that it has dangerous toxins that cause alot of symptoms and attacking organs causing them to shut down. Please never use this product and spread the word. It attacked their nervous system too. thanks.

  • Heather

I too just bought a bag of Meow Mix in August 2013 and both of my cats have severe diarrhea and are puking…

    • Ann

I have two cats always fed them meow mix. My first cat Cleo ate some from the bag I bought in Aug. 2013 got sick and never touched the stuff again. My second cat Jasmine got sick also. Cleo is a small cat dosen’t eat that much. Jasmine is a huge cat and eats a lot. Jasmine got so sick from throwing up and not being able to keep anything in her stomach that she finally past away this Nov. Cleo however has not died but has gotten so skinny I did not know if she was going to make it. I wished I looked up this information long before now. There was something wrong with that cat food and my cat DIED from it. I will never buy it again. How dare them for not saying anything. Both of my cats threw up and had dierrah. You cannot tell me Del Monte did not know this, they just did not care! Never in my lifetime will I use there cat food again!

  • Jeanie

My bag I bought had tons of roaches I returned it got my money and a free can of raid

  • Jill

We just had to put our 3 year old Oliver to sleep today. He was acting kinda strange and he threw up a couple of time. I took him to the Vet and they found out that he was full of crystals. They were unable to unclog him, because it was so bad. The vet said it was due to his diet. I told her that we feed him Meow Mix. She said that they put a lot of junk in there… He ate Meow Mix all the time.
I will tell everyone NOT to feed there cats this. So no one has to got through what we just went through.

  • Khalil McDonald

Meow mix made my cat sick and is almost dead.

    • Tiffany Prulhiere

My cat is in the vets office now with his liver failing. He has been eating meow mix now for a few months. After reading all of this makes me wonder. There should be a recall!!!!

      • megan

YES there should be, please dont use this product my cats are very sick and are on medication, they are getting better. Their vet said that there are bad toxins in the meow mix that causes organs to shut down. PLease spread the word. Thanks

    • blair

i have a cat and she is pooping in the shower and peeing in there to and flopping and layed straight out in the kitchen and acting very strange now

what should i do about this

  • Margaret

I have three cats throwing up after eating Meow Mix. All three were fine before I put this new food out. I was checking for a recall. Something has to be wrong with it. My cats have had it before without a problem so this latest batch has to be bad!!!

    • Brie

I have always fed my cat Meow Mix and have never had a problem until now. We bought a new bag and since then my cat has been vomiting and has severe diarrhea. I was looking for a recall as well but I’m not finding anything. There has to be something wrong with the bag I bought.

      • chris

same thing with my cats they have never gotten sick from it untill we got this bag and now they are vomiting all over the place….. i think im gonna stop bying meow mix after some of the comments i have seen on here liver failure, cats near death ect.

  • Stella

I purchased one can of meow mix for my 10 month old kitten because he was not eating his other canned food. He loved themeowmix and ate most of it but now I am really worried about him after reading the reviews! I wish I had read them before I fed him this! I feel bad that I may have made him sick. I’ll have to keep checking his litter box.

  • Kathleeh

There should be a giant warning on all Meow Mix packages: WARNING! MEOW MIX WILL MAKE YOU CAT VOMIT AND HAVE DIARRHEA!!! ~ Four days ago we started feeding Trillby & Tuppence Meow Mix which they had never had before. As of this forth morning, we have had to clean their vomit etc. out of the carpet FOUR times! They are both under 2 years and have been healthy kitty’s util now. We’ve dumping the giant bag of Meow Mix in the garbage as we will NOT be giving it to them anymore. We’re going to pay attention to the ingredients from here on! Del Monte products are banned from our shopping list!

    • Dan

We recently bought a new bag of Meow Mix hairball control for our cat and after we fed her she became very sick and began vomiting and had diarreah. We took her to the vet and a he gave her a b12 shot and treated her for dehydration and prescribed some canned cat food and she made a fast recovery. As soon as we fed her Meow Mix she became sick again and back to the vet again! The vet asked us if we had just bought a new bag of cat food and we said yes and he said don’t feed her any more food out of the bag. They treated herfor dehydration and gave her a steroid shot. We bought a different brand of canned cat food and now we have a healthy and happy cat

  • Chrissy

Ever since we have had our cats we have fed them Meow Mix. When our male Norwegian Forest cat was around five or six, we noticed a dramatic loss of weight and behavior. He became very lethargic and lost his entire second coat of fur. Buster couldn’t even control his bladder. We went to the vet and was told that the problem would be treatable though he was originally around twenty pounds and weighed only seven. The next day, the test results said that his kidneys were failing and he was slowly dying. We made the tough decision to put our Buster Boy down. The vet said his veins were so weak and full of water that they could barely put him an IV in him. We had no idea why this happened until I went to school and one of my teachers announced he had to put his cat down for renal failure as well. His vet told him to NEVER feed a cat Meow Mix because this would be the result. Please NEVER, EVER feed your cat Meow Mix!

  • Stephen

I had to take over the care of a young cat, no more than 3months old. I tried so many cat foods, some from Vets, and this cat would not eat them. I even tried to force her to eat them by not giving her any more food. That didn’t work. I tried Meow Mix wet food and she loves it to death . I am now reading that Meow Mix is a low quality food. The high quality food she will not eat. I have no problem with any of the dry foods I have tried. I give her chicken from our leftovers and she loves that. I change her water three times aday, but she doesn’t seem to drink much.
it’s annoying to think these pet foods from these giant companies are not the best foods for them.
I have been giving my cat two small cups of wet food a day. One in the morning and one in the evening, and about 4/5 cup of dry food available to her all day. This seems to have worked very well. She is growing rapidly and looks great. No weight proble and she poops twice aday. I read to keep an 8 lb cat to less than 300 calories aday.
I have raised many children in my day and I don’t think I had this much of a concern with food for them.

  • E. Saxton

I fed some beef & chicken tender moments to my old cat–she started foaming at the mouth, ran off and vomited! It was terrible. I thought it was her sensitive stomach and let my young healthy cat finish it. She also started foaming at the mouth and ran away retching!. I called the Meow Mix 877 number twice and both times got a bogus pre-recorded ad and was disconnected. Why is this company still in business? Please–don’t anyone buy this crap because it will make your cat sick!

  • Cassidy

This food is the worst crap you could give your cat. One feeding of this had my 5 year old Bombay female upchucking all over the carpet and the poor thing got diarrhea for 3 days! There must be super strong dyes in it because now my carpet is stained. Needless to say the bag was tossed along with the remains in the bowl. She’s been on the Kirkland Brand dry and Wellness wet canned food ever since and she is much happier, healthier and active.

  • Marci

My cats also were really sick whilst eating this crap. They stopped throwing up the day I switched away from it. This stuff is terrible.

    • Olivia

Recently purchased a new bag of Meow Mix Original and my cat has been trowing up several times a day. I’m not even going to wait for a recall to stop feeding my cat this food (animals die before they ever make an announcement).

It’s also worth noting that my cat has eaten this food since he was little and he has suffered a previous and unexplained bout of renal and liver distress. I had to spend $900 to keep him at the vets for 3 days on IV fluids + an antibiotic. They couldn’t diagnose the cause for his distress, but his liver enzymes were elevated and they said he had Feline hepatic lipidosis (fatty liver). They did say the lipidosis was a symptom and not the underlying cause of his problem.

Now I can’t say if he is genetically predisposed to this problem or if it was the food, but I’m definitely switching foods now.

  • gina

Meow Mix dry- Makes my cats vomit. The worse part is that whatever food coloring they use in the formula is strong because I cant get the vomit stains out of the carpet when I try to clean it. That can’t be good.

  • Sarah E

This is the worst cat food. It made my baby throw up, and I didn’t know why. Pooooooooor Frankie. Terrible Company, Evil People trying to hurt my kitty. But really, it is terrible for cats.

  • Jean Pearson

    23.Feb 2013
Fed my cat Meow Mix he vomits and it stains my carpet. threw it away.

  • Karen

My cat got diarrhea a few hours after eating this the first time. I didn’t think to much about it at the time. About two weeks later I gave her a little again, this time she starting throwing up and had bloody diarrhea. By the next morning she was fine, still a little weak though. I have emailed the company, maybe a bad batch?

  • kit

Possibly the junkiest brand name kibble on the market, the ingredients are very similar to those in store brand/generic kibble. I didn’t know any better being a 1st time cat owner, and like most people, thought, “my cat likes this, it must be good”. Wrong! It also stinks a lot more than the food my cat gets now, his food now actually smells good to me haha. I’m surprised any cat can survive off such ‘food’ as this, good thing I only went through a few small bags.

  • Jessica

Has anyone else found maggots in Meow mix tender centers, or is it just me? I keep my cat food in a sealed container but for the second time, I’ve thrown food out and been disturbed for days. Not getting the flavor again and after these reviews… I think I’ll find a different brand.

But seriously… Has anyone else seen worms/maggots?

    • Granita

Yes, I had that problem too —- with the type with the meat filled centers.

      • suzanne

I just bought a bag of tender centers-opened and bugs flew out. Gross! I have a very fussy kitty and he will eat this stuff.
        Gross! Gross!

    • Samantha

OMG! I found a mess of maggots and moths in an open bag of Meow Mix Tender Centers, wrapped it up to throw out, opened a brand new bag and too is filled with maggots. YIKES!

  • Charissa

My family cat ate Meow Mix her entire 14 years. She became dramatically overweight and now has Diabetes, and has flares of pancreatitis (sp?). She is so used to the flavor that she will not even try eating the prescription food and has dropped weight like crazy from starving herself. I would not recommend Meow Mix AT ALL.

  • Paola

I decided to my first cat back in august and since i didn’t know much on cat food i bought this because it was cheap and i didn’t think twice about the formula. My cay didn’t really like it or dislike it but he always left food in his bowl and i noticed it gave him the runs and he constantly had to go to the litter box more than i thought was normal, his coat wasn’t shiny, and i could hear his tummy be upset when he was cuddled with me. I also tried another brand of cat food and that one was better but his crap still wasn’t firm. Luckily I switched foods when he finished the bags and i noticed a dramatic change in his behavior and he wasn’t having the run anymore and within a week his coat was shiny.. I now feed him something that cost more but its worth it. I do not recommend this to anyone. From reading other comments I’m very glad I switched and it didn’t cause any damage to my cat.

  • Bev B

Thank you to the staff for your quick response. I would like to know 2 things if you could help me out.

1/ my cat (just adopted a month ago) is very overweight and calories per day should be noted when feeding as well but I can’t seem to find ANY cat foods that actually list this.
2/ Pet stores are always telling me that THEIR food is better because the commercial ones (WalMart or grocery chains) are always cooked at high temperatures for long periods of time, thus, little or no nutrition left in retail product compared to THEIR (pet stores only) products. Is this true or just a selling point?

Thank you in advance for any help you might be able to give me on this.

    Bev

YOU LIST HERE (ABOVE) ON THIS PAGE:
    Top 5 Ingredients*
    Ground yellow corn
    Corn gluten meal
    Chicken by-product meal
    Soybean meal
Beef tallow preserved with mixed-tocopherols (source of vitamin e)

WHERE EXACTLY are you getting this info from?????????

I have Meow Mix Tender Favourites in the 2.75 oz. little cups. The ingredients listed above are NOT EVEN ON THE LABEL !! The first 5 listed ingredients on the REAL Tuna & whole shrimp in sauce selection are: (3 types available in box)
    TUNA
    FISH BROTH
    OCEAN FISH
    SHRIMP
    SOYBEAN OIL
So, I’m not sure why you are listing Ground Yellow Corn as the first listed/main ingredient. Why is this info being printed here ??

Like to know!!! Is this an OLD ingredient listing that maybe should be changed ??? Nov. 19th, 2012 is today & THOSE products are NOT listed as you state on this web page!

Good info about natural ways to treat your cat and keep him/her hetlahy for a long life. My 11-yr-old kitty was hyperthyroidic, and now eats an all-raw meat diet and she is in stunning health! No surgeries, no pills, no radiation treatments just pure, natural goodness.

  • DolariitoOs

i have 2 cats the cost of care is stuff like food about a32 for a box, litter box a34-a35 maybe(when trianing) and vet care things like injection. Well my cats love attention and they love to sleep lol you’ll just have to put your crystal and china out of the way because cats LOVE exploring and do tend to breaking things if in there way

Cats are Carnivores: Corn is Cheap (Simple economics)

Thank you for a revealing, honest look at this popular cat food. Feeding this diet to a human–with it’s high corn content–might be akin to living on corn chips. Research is available on what constitutes a healthy diet for cats. Please read it and then choose.

  • Michael

Fed my cat Meow Mix for 13 years. Never considered the content because she loved the food. She died this year from kidney failure. I think it had alot to do with my poor choice of food. She was never allowed outside or to be around other cats to keep her healthy. I hope other people do not make the same mistake.

PLANNING CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT TO MAKE CAT FOOD PRODUCT SAFER SEE LETTER TO MANUFACTURE PLZ CONTACT ME AT 252-916-9169 TO LET ME TELL YOU HOW YOU CAN HELP SAVE LIVES ,MAYBE COMPINSATION FOR PRODUCT YOU BOUGHT THAT MAY HAVE HARMED YOUR CAT:

I have fed my three cats moew mix since they where born 3.5 yrs , I am a bio tech ,after my vet told me that meow mix was making my cats very unhealthy fat deposits, gastro intestinal and or belly swelling and my female has been sick for sometime could not figure out why she was vomiting and had constant runs with bright blood present,I desired to check out whats in their food,.The test I ran showed High levels of bacteria such as found in fecal matter and very poor handling of products use to make meow mix, along with other trace contaminates,I feel very ripped off and disappointed that I trusted your product to the health of my animals . I have since started my animals on another product that i ran the same test on side by side with your product and found that it had 83% less contaminates.I feel I have been misled buy your commercials and the pitches about and for your product.please refer to this page I found with one look Meow Mix Cat Food Reviews, Ratings and Analysis
( petfoodtalk.com/catfoodreviews/meow-mix/ )I am considering a class action lawsuit there have been deaths and poor health to animals everywhere ,I believe due to your product, and feel I’m going to incur more vet bills due to ongoing issues with the health problems my animals have due to your product.

      • Karissa

My Kitty got sick one day threw up the tender centers meow mix and got really week and would not do anything but lay down I did not have money for vet and she died two days later my other cat is now starting to throw up the food too and she does not act sick like the other cat but after reading these reviews I now believe it is the food that killed my cat and is making them sick I’m changing foods right away hopefully my other cat does not die as well

    • megan

I am very sorry to hear this. Please never use this product, because it has very bad toxins that cause organs to shut down. It caused my cats to have many symptoms, they are on medication and hopping they will get better. Their vet said that the toxin in the cat food attacked our kittens nervous system and lots of other things happened, I could go on, but PLEASE do not use this and spread the word. Thanks

  • Webster

My 2 cats will not eat Tender Centers. Found partially chewed food next to the dish. One cat is in vet emergency clinic with bowel obstruction and ileus & fever right now. Not sure if related to this food, but coincidentally started it the day before.

  • Marcy

My roommate dumped 3 cats on me and I can barely afford to take care of my pets so I have to purchase low cost cat food. I bought Meow Mix hairball control because it was on sale and figured it couldn’t hurt. Heck 4 cats and in 4 years I can’t even remember 1 furball. The package said it helps prevent furballs. Well the package is lying. My cats are tossing up furballs 3 times a day, on my sofa, my chairs, all over the floors, even on the cat tree. It’s pretty disgusting and this started happening the moment I started using this crap. It doesn’t prevent furballs. It creates them!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Cat Whisper

I bought a small bag of meow mix tender centers last week for my cats and at first they ate it then I noticed all of my cats had no interest in it and I could not for the life of me figure put why they wouldn’t eat it. Even the bugs won’t touch it. I think it’s been tainted. These are cats that never turn down food.
I don’t have money for a vet and I’m praying they don’t die from whatever was in this cat food.

  • linda taylor

I’ve been feeding my three cats original meow mix for seven years, since they were kittens. The dry and the wet food. Their health is not good, they often vomit it up. As they are getting older they have all developed health problems. I switched last week to an another dry brand that is corn, wheat, and soy free. The first three ing. are meat, meat broth,. It’s just been a week. The vomiting and diarrhea has already stopped. I have spent thousands on vets when I couldn’t afford too. On medical test that never gave me answers. I thought if they were allowed to sale it that it had to be safe. I was wrong. Happy to say that all three are feeling better. Hope it’s not to late to reverse any damage that has been done.

  • Cheryl

Please, please feed your cat a better quality food! The red color is dye and chemicals and kitty’s tummy is trying to tell you something! Try a pet store instead of a grocery store and see if you can find something that might work budget wise. Feeding your cat this food is like feeding your child nothing but candy.

    • Lisa B.

My mom gave me a bag of this food 3 days ago. My cat took one bite and snarfed it down, he loves it! However, he has had the runs something fierce since yesterday. Glad I found these reviews, I will throw out that food immediately!

  • renee

My cat cinders been throwing it up also

  • Clara

Get OxiClean (powder form) mix with water at home and make sure to follow the instructions given by the product. I tried this on a WHITE CARPET stained by Welches Grape Juice and it successfully removed the stain.
    1. Do a color fast test to make sure is color safe in a very small area like under the sofa.
    2. Once the 1st test is successful then you can use it in the rest of the carpet.
I used the formula above successfully but I didn’t have to worry about color safe. Also the reason why I say powder is I’m afraid that the OxiClean liquid is not strong enough.

  • Lou Ann Aylor

When my cat throws up this cat food, the red colors stain my light colored carpet and I cannot get that stain out. Since I rent, this is going to cause me to lose my security deposit. Do you have any solutions to get this stain out of the carpet?
    Thank you.

Try Nature’s Miracle stain remover. It is fantastic for difficult stains. Also Hot Spot spray is good, too.

More Information

Meow Mix Cat Food

“Meow Mix – It’s all about the mix!” This catchy slogan is featured in many of the Meow Mix commercials, advertisements and marketing material. However, Meow Mix is often referred to as a “budget” cat food formula, without any real nutritional benefits for cats.

Who is Meow Mix Manufactured By?

The company who makes Meow Mix cat food is called Del Monte Foods. Del Monte Foods is one of the largest producers of food products in the United States. Del Monte produces food items for both animals and people. Meow Mix is made at the “Meow Mix Facility”, which is a 200,000 square foot warehouse in Alabama. This same facility also produces formulas for other cat food brands. Though Meow Mix was previously owned by Purina, it was divested in the year 2000, and is now owned exclusively by Del Monte Foods.

Meow Mix Cat Food Recall

Meow Mix cat food is not listed on the FDA’s pet food recall website, and has not been involved in any recent recalls. However, in order to make sure that your cat’s food is safe, it’s always highly recommended that you check the FDA’s pet food recall website. This will help you to stay updated on the latest pet food recall information.

Meow Mix Cat Food Ingredients

The first two ingredients of most Meow Mix brand formulas are ground yellow corn and corn gluten meal. Chicken by-product meal seems to be the main source of protein in Meow Mix formulas. The fat source in Meow Mix is usually beef tallow. Animal digest is also present in many of the formulas, as well as soybean meal. All Meow Mix formulas contain added salt and chemical coloring.

Meow Mix Allergies

Meow Mix is definitely not suitable for cats that have allergies. This is because it is a high-carbohydrate formula, and corn is the main ingredient. Most cats have difficulty digesting corn, even if they don’t have a corn-specific food allergy. If your cat has a specific allergy, you should always read the ingredients of any cat food formula.

  7. cat April 7, 2015 at 1:14 pm #

  10. Justme February 11, 2015 at 9:56 pm #

  11. Alayna February 10, 2015 at 8:19 pm #

  12. Ashley January 26, 2015 at 12:02 am #

  13. Chris Doko January 23, 2015 at 4:26 pm #

    • Carol May 4, 2015 at 5:08 pm #

This just happened to my cat this week. SAME symptoms right after eating a new bag of meow mix tender center dry cat food. Vet said he had a UTI. He died at the vet office when they tried to insert a Cather. If you go to court, I’ll go with you!!!
I still have the bag of food. I think it is the high ash content in cheap cat food that caused the blockage in his bladder. How many other cat owners has this happened to? Are you out there? Are you ready to take action? Why is this so easy to slip thru the cracks?

We just lost a sweet baby boy, 3 months old. He was fine one day, bloody diarrhea the next. He was gone in two hours. I had switched to Meow Mix a few weeks before since a friend was having good luck with it for his older Siamese. My 12 year old was throwing it up off and on, my 11 year old started having nasty stools. We switched them, but my other cats seemed fine but not looking as healthy. We thought the baby had somehow gotten into something. Now I think it was the Meow Mix. Back to Purina. It works best for them.

  15. Guest September 30, 2014 at 10:03 pm #

Purchased meow mix tender centers September 25th and my cat dies on the 29th four days later. Is it the food? Read a few other comments saying that this brand might have killed their cats days later as well and the company should be contacted about this.

  16. twigs September 14, 2014 at 7:55 pm #

I lost 2 cats to meow mix 3 weeks apart. thats all they ate. please dont feed your cats meow mix..this is heart breaking that companys you trust get away with killing our pets. NEVER AGAIN! SHAME ON DELMONTE

  17. Ted September 14, 2014 at 10:14 am #

The 12 cup variety pack wet Meow Mix doesn’t say anything about corn meal or any of these other ingredients. It says crude protein. Is that the same as corn meal??

    • CrazyCrab12 June 8, 2015 at 12:27 am #

crude protien is the percentage of protein in the food.

  19. Miss Kitty August 1, 2014 at 7:56 am #

  20. Liz Hood July 30, 2014 at 10:09 am #

    • Carol May 3, 2015 at 10:51 pm #

Oh my gosh, this just happened to my cat this weekend. Fed him exactly the same thing?? Why do they keep selling this poison and we buy it unknowingly. Shouldn’t there be a warning on this product or a recall? My cat is very very sick and may not pull through.

  21. ssohara June 28, 2014 at 12:07 am #

How sad. Sorry for that. I was wondering about this stuff. I just bought a bag and my cat, who usually goes crazy for this stuff, will not go near it. I will throw it out right away. You have helped my cat. Thanks.

      • Mel Franklin July 25, 2014 at 9:39 am #

your very welcome i lost all 3 of my cats within a month .its sad that your trust the places you buy your cat food from and it ends up killing your cats

    • Liz Hood July 30, 2014 at 10:11 am #

Was the flavour Tuna & Whitefish? 3 of mine have gotten quite sick from eating it. My cats hate Kit and Kaboodle.

  24. CastingPearls June 3, 2014 at 6:48 pm #

  25. Sylvia Rodriguez June 1, 2014 at 2:53 am #

  26. Lizzie May 25, 2014 at 5:05 pm #

    • Meg June 23, 2014 at 9:24 am #

Thank you for writing an honest review without the use of scare tactics, rumours, or hyperbole.

    • Scottie Payne June 23, 2014 at 11:44 pm #

Yes, last time I had a pet was 1980. On 6/6/2014, two stray cats showed on my patio that were starving! It was 110 degrees that day so I could not ignore them.

These cats are hard core bird hunters who were down on their luck. It looks like they have gained about 5lbs eating Meow Mix, I still cannot get close enough to them to pet them.

They have taken over my patio and feel completely at home now. Between their bird hunting,(I’ve seen the feathers), and Meow Mix I should not have to do anything else, right?

  27. Michael May 22, 2014 at 10:54 am #

My two month old snowshoe cat, Max, has recently started eating MeowMix wet cat food and has been having runny orangey diarrhea lately! -__-

  28. Sunny May 22, 2014 at 2:31 am #

  29. Jayne Ludwikoski May 14, 2014 at 4:46 pm #

Thank you

    • Lizzie May 25, 2014 at 4:36 pm #

Obviously Meow Mix did not give your cat oral cancer. Especially since it is not possible your cat only ate the indoor formula because it has not existed for 13 years. You can check and people have the same problems on much higher quality food. In no way can this food cause oral cancer.

  30. Tyler April 28, 2014 at 6:12 pm #

  31. Evelyn McNeil April 11, 2014 at 10:13 am #

  32. Mark M April 8, 2014 at 7:43 pm #

  33. Sara B February 15, 2014 at 11:34 pm #

    • Liz Hood July 30, 2014 at 10:16 am #

My now 10 year old cat was found to have the same problem 4 years ago. She now stays in a room upstairs with the whole upstairs to run in–but has an old bed covered in shower curtains and puppy pads. She urinates on the puppy pads there as well as sprays the wall. Meow Mix will not be bought again for this household of 9 cats inside and 4 outside.

hope you never plan on selling your house, you are going to need a hazmat team to clean it with 9 cats and 1 with its own spraying room.

My cat has bright red blood in his stools and this started soon after changing to meow mix tenders. I thought he was just getting old but I now realize that something is wrong with this food.

He did not eat the food yesterday or today and he is already acting like he feels better. There is something very dangerous in meow mix.

      • Sunny May 22, 2014 at 2:18 am #

This is Sunny and I am writing to tell you that my cat did not survive. DO NOT FEED MEOW MIX TO YOUR CAT!!!

  38. Shannon December 21, 2013 at 11:10 pm #

    • Amy May 8, 2014 at 5:45 am #

My family works in pest control. This is a problem with the length of time and how this product was stored. Most likely the result of the store you purchased it from keeping it in the back for too long. Very common in stores who have too much over product. Unless you have any other reasons to not buy meow mix, I would reconsider the store. Not Del Monte.

  41. Cindy November 24, 2013 at 7:43 pm #

    • Terri December 13, 2013 at 3:58 pm #

      Hi Cindy,
Please do not feed your cat Meow Mix, we had our 3 yr old cat on that type of cat food and he almost died.

    • Erin Corral November 30, 2013 at 7:53 am #

      Dan!

I had the same thing happen. The inside of the bag was littered with moths, and larvae. I’m still trying to get the moths out of the house. I keep finding larvae up by the corners of the ceiling in my kitchen.

I will NEVER NEVER NEVER buy this cat food again. How disgusting.

I was thinking of trying meow mix for my cat because she likes soft treats so much and I thought the tender centers. Would. Be just the ticket for her. After reading about. All. The sick cats I wouldn’t put this food anywhere near me baby.

Last few bags I bought have been fine. But one bought from walmart in November makes 2 of my cats have diarrhea and go outside litter box purchasing new food.

  49. tara October 11, 2013 at 11:31 pm #

  50. bill October 11, 2013 at 1:30 am #

been feeding our kitten tuna and shrimp for months now the food is a dark red and gave her diahrea, taking back to store our pet deserves better than crap just to keep profits up I see we are not the only ones disappointed with the lack in quality

  51. Anna October 8, 2013 at 2:16 am #

    • Anna October 23, 2013 at 5:13 pm #

I contacted Del Monte about what happened with our cat and notified them what I had found online recently with similar stories. They sent me a prepaid envelope to send them 2 cups of food and told me they would let me know of their findings. We’ve since changed Stewie to Purina ONE Beyond – Chicken/Oatmeal. We had to ease in with some wet food mixed in, but he’s fully transitioned to the new food and it feeling much better.

  52. Krissy October 7, 2013 at 10:44 pm #

I bought my cat meow mix and now both my cat and dog are puking everywhere (the dog likes to sneak cat food). Why isn’t there a recall after all I have read?!

  53. Zabu September 26, 2013 at 11:26 am #

  54. Danny Hendrix September 19, 2013 at 10:38 pm #

Danny

  55. Kristie September 16, 2013 at 4:06 pm #

It attacked their nervous system too. thanks.

I too just bought a bag of Meow Mix in August 2013 and both of my cats have severe diarrhea and are puking…

    • Ann November 30, 2013 at 5:37 am #

I have three cats throwing up after eating Meow Mix. All three were fine before I put this new food out. I was checking for a recall. Something has to be wrong with it. My cats have had it before without a problem so this latest batch has to be bad!!!

I have always fed my cat Meow Mix and have never had a problem until now. We bought a new bag and since then my cat has been vomiting and has severe diarrhea. I was looking for a recall as well but I’m not finding anything. There has to be something wrong with the bag I bought.

same thing with my cats they have never gotten sick from it untill we got this bag and now they are vomiting all over the place….. i think im gonna stop bying meow mix after some of the comments i have seen on here liver failure, cats near death ect.

  61. Stella June 18, 2013 at 11:12 pm #

  62. Kathleeh May 20, 2013 at 12:26 pm #

    • Dan December 29, 2013 at 8:21 pm #

  63. Chrissy April 29, 2013 at 8:59 pm #

  64. Stephen April 21, 2013 at 10:04 pm #

  65. E. Saxton April 14, 2013 at 9:10 pm #

  66. Cassidy April 2, 2013 at 3:57 pm #

  67. Marci March 18, 2013 at 1:42 am #

My cats also were really sick whilst eating this crap. They stopped throwing up the day I switched away from it. This stuff is terrible.

    • Olivia May 1, 2013 at 6:48 pm #

  68. gina March 13, 2013 at 12:59 pm #

Meow Mix dry- Makes my cats vomit. The worse part is that whatever food coloring they use in the formula is strong because I cant get the vomit stains out of the carpet when I try to clean it. That can’t be good.

  69. Sarah E February 27, 2013 at 1:14 am #

This is the worst cat food. It made my baby throw up, and I didn’t know why. Pooooooooor Frankie. Terrible Company, Evil People trying to hurt my kitty. But really, it is terrible for cats.

  72. kit January 26, 2013 at 9:51 pm #

  73. Jessica January 7, 2013 at 3:31 am #

    • Granita February 22, 2013 at 5:58 am #

Yes, I had that problem too —- with the type with the meat filled centers.

        Gross! Gross!

OMG! I found a mess of maggots and moths in an open bag of Meow Mix Tender Centers, wrapped it up to throw out, opened a brand new bag and too is filled with maggots. YIKES!

No surgeries, no pills, no radiation treatments just pure, natural goodness.

i have 2 cats the cost of care is stuff like food about a32 for a box, litter box a34-a35 maybe(when trianing) and vet care things like injection.

Fed my cat Meow Mix for 13 years. Never considered the content because she loved the food. She died this year from kidney failure. I think it had alot to do with my poor choice of food. She was never allowed outside or to be around other cats to keep her healthy. I hope other people do not make the same mistake.

Thanks

My 2 cats will not eat Tender Centers. Found partially chewed food next to the dish. One cat is in vet emergency clinic with bowel obstruction and ileus & fever right now. Not sure if related to this food, but coincidentally started it the day before.

Please, please feed your cat a better quality food! The red color is dye and chemicals and kitty’s tummy is trying to tell you something! Try a pet store instead of a grocery store and see if you can find something that might work budget wise. Feeding your cat this food is like feeding your child nothing but candy.

My mom gave me a bag of this food 3 days ago. My cat took one bite and snarfed it down, he loves it! However, he has had the runs something fierce since yesterday. Glad I found these reviews, I will throw out that food immediately!

When my cat throws up this cat food, the red colors stain my light colored carpet and I cannot get that stain out. Since I rent, this is going to cause me to lose my security deposit. Do you have any solutions to get this stain out of the carpet?
    Thank you.

    • S. Turner June 19, 2011 at 5:15 am #

Try Nature’s Miracle stain remover. It is fantastic for difficult stains. Also Hot Spot spray is good, too.
