Our Analysis

We believe that although Evolve Cat Food does contain a moderate level of carbohydrates, it still has the makings of a highly nutritious and tasty cat food. The food comes in three formulas, Kitten, Cat, and Senior Cat. Each formula lists chicken and chicken meal as the first two ingredients, meaning it is high in beneficial proteins. The formulas also include live active enzymes for added nutrition, and a slew of healthy ingredients like vegetables, flaxseed meal, dried kelp, and fruits. That being said, the blends also include carbohydrates such as rice, brewer’s rice, and bran. Pet owners that want to avoid feeding their cats carbohydrates may want to think carefully about this brand. It should be noted that the Kitten brand formula was recalled in 2007 due to suspected contamination. This may be a good thing though, as it has prompted the company to make extra efforts to ensure their food is safe and contaminant-free.

The Word on the Street...

People just cannot seem to make up their minds when it comes to Evolve Cat Food. Some cat owners say that their cats love this food, even the super finicky cats that normally shy away from commercial brands. Many claim that their cat’s health problems have cleared up after switching to this food. Cats that previously suffered vomiting, diarrhea, and urinary tract infections seem to be on the road to recovery. In addition, some owners claim that their pets eat less and drink less when consuming Evolve Cat Food, which is a sign of a healthier and more nutritious blend. However, others say that this brand has caused their pets to have runny stool. Some extrapolate that the reason for the runny stool is that their cats have a hard time absorbing the high protein and nutrient levels in the food. Overall, cat owners seem to be split 50/50 on this brand of food.

This is the second time I have bought this food (Evolve) for my cats, and it’s the last. Im going to bring to it back to The grocery store and see if I can get back my $20 dollars!! I have three cats. One never goes outside. Another one never comes inside. The third goes in and out. Oh and a stray cat and other critters have eaten the food outside before too and the cat bowl is still full at this moment!! I bought the Salmon Brown Rice and Barley Formula. It’s been two days and none of them will touch it. The first time I bought a small bag to try it. I had to throw it out. They wouldn’t eat it. I forgot when I bought it a second time, cause I was rushing and it looked different and healthy that I had bought the same food months back. I was already home and of course tired. My cats are all over ten years old and pretty healthy. Not trying to knock this brand of cat food but we all need to save some money and still have happy/healthy animals!!! Think I will stick with the less expensive cat food like they have been having and stop rushing. Have a nice day everyone:)

  • All.For.Kitties

I certainly hope your kitty is doing better. I feed my cats (4) Evolve cat food. I have recently had a discussion with my vet and she has said that feeding cats a strictly dry cat food diet is hard on their kidneys. This is how she explained it. Cats in the wild eat raw meat which contains a lot of moisture. Cats in the wild do not drink much water they get it from their diet. Cats teeth are made for ripping and tearing their prey not crunching on hard dry food. All of these statements are the reasons so many kitties are having kidney and teeth problems. I have started feeding my kitties 75% canned food. I do still leave dry out for their snacking during the day. My cats have been more active and their coats are glossier since this change in their diet. I know all our kitties are different and everyone has to do what they can afford and what seems best for kitties – I am just sharing some advice I was given that helped my babies.

I have been feeding my cats Evolve Indoor Cat formula for almost a year. Had to take one of my cats to the vet today. Found out he has KIDNEY STONES, caused by the FOOD he has been eating. My cats have exclusively been eating Evolve for this past year!!! My poor kitty is so blocked, he has to be knocked out in order for the vet to cath him and allow him to pee!!! We are now going to have to use prescription food for our kitty!!!

    • nobaddog

Hows your kitty? I was thinking of using this food. My cats love it. Have you any more info on the cause of the stones, was it really the food? Hows the other kitty?

      • Luna.mom40

As this was the ONLY food he had been eating for about a year, I have to assume it was the cause of the stones. Simon is better after emergency surgery to remove his penis!!! He had 100% blockage and it was the only life saving measure to take! Fortunately my other cats are ok. This surgery was extremely expensive and he now has to eat prescription food for the rest of his life.

This food is good for the price if you have multiple cats. My cats eat it as their main food with better food or raw supplemented as I refuse to feed them anything with corn or ‘animal’ in the ingredients. I recently switched over other cats when I babysat them for a few months. Once they made full conversion the effects are noticeable enough that the owner doesn’t mind paying more, one that was always vomiting and chubby is now lean and rarely vomits since stopping corn-based food. Coats and energy and moods are improved.

There is one problem I’ve had, recently every few bags, I get a bag where the food is lighter in color and the cats don’t really like it and I think it caused bad diarrhea in a few of them this last time. I’m not sure if Walmart’s handling of them might cause it to have spoiled though – often the bags there must get manhandled as it is not uncommon to find them taped up. (I think food in foil bags is more prone to spoiling due to having actual food in them. )

This food has worked really well for my cats. One of my kitties has had serious problems keeping on weight since she was a kitten. The vet couldn’t find an underlying reason for it, and nothing seemed to help–not grain free foods, not high-calorie supplements, not store-brand garbage food all but guaranteed to make cats fat. Meanwhile, her sister was packing on the pounds. Trying to feed them separate diets was a nightmare, as they’d been used to sharing a dish since they were younger and more often than not they’d just end up eating each other’s food.

I actually picked this up as a fluke–I couldn’t get to Tractor Supply to pick up their usual food (4health), and this seemed to be the most comparable food ingredients-wise that Wal-Mart carried. I was a little apprehensive given this food’s very low fat content, but as it turns out I had nothing to fear.

My skinny kitty has gained roughly two pounds since I switched, and her sister has lost a comparable amount. They are both healthy, active cats at very healthy weights with super soft and shiny coats. They both eat it happily, and I haven’t noticed any foreign objects or rancid odors like other people have found with this food. About the only complaint I have is that the company doesn’t make a dry formula without chicken or fish so that I can give it to my third cat, who has food sensitivities.

  • AmbeRoo

I put my 7 year old healthy Blue Russian on this food. He didn’t like the change of food at all and that never seemed to change.
I just kept feeding it to him and even tried mixing it with Blue Buffalo. He never really seemed to enjoy it.
Only a few short months later, (I didn’t even get through one bag), he started to act lethargic and lose his appetite.
I took him into the vet, $600 later and a million tests… He passed away… I firmly believe it was an issue with the food as I have found plastic pieces and other foreign objects in the bag on multiple occasions. DO NOT feed your cat evolve! I am having the food tested ASAP!
This should never have happened! I wish I would never have changed his food!!!

  • Erin

I was fine with the ingredients and price, but my cat won’t touch it. I tried mixing it 50/50 with her old purina, but she picked out the purina and left the evolve in the bowl. Seems like it’s hit or miss with cats.

  • Nicole

I began giving my cat this, after he was diagnosed with FELV. I needed something healthier but at a price I could afford. I did research on this product and from this review alone, I gave it a try. He has never had any problems with it, loves it. He eats less and his litter box isnt as smelly. He is doing remarkable considering his diagnosis. The only thing I would like to see is more flavor variety.

  • bbh

Having read a lot of the comments, I’m a little wary. I started my 3 cats on Evolve 2 or 3 months ago. They all seem healthy, though poop still stinks badly. However my 6 year old female who was always mopey and low energy is now more energetic. She plays more and plays with the other cats which she never did before. She has been to the vet, she is healthy. She just had a kind of rough life before I had her. But it was after eating evolve she suddenly had some energy. The other two were always energetic so there isn’t much difference there. I’m pleased with this food. It has actual meat in it, and we have had no problems with it. Now I’m worried though, having read the negative reviews.

  • Pat Riot

Evolve canned food contains Carrageenan. NOT something you want to be feeding your cats.

  • Jennifer Butler

I was so happy to find Evolve cat food back on my local grocery shelves. My only criticism is that it only comes in small bags, not large ones. I have multiple cats so we go through several of the small bags every week. The cats haven’t had a “hairball incident” since I restarted them on this food. They also produce less waste. My young pit bull puppy is also on the garbanzo bean formula for dogs and enjoys this food much more than some of the other healthy brands that I have tried.

Dear Sirs, I had read a lot of the reviews, but I just saw Donna’s reply on June 13 of last year (2013). Although I appreciate her reply, since I know that she feeds strays too, I assure you that I am not Donna, now or ever. I always go by Susan, the name my parents named me. That way, anyone who wants to reply to any of my rebel rousing opinions I give on any site, when I have an opinion, and they don’t agree with me, I can be sure to state my opinion again…..because EVERYONE is entitled to hear my opinion. (Just a little humor there) You don’t have to print my opinion if you don’t want to, since Evolve Cat Food people now know that the cats here won’t eat it. Maybe Evolve will want to make a better tasting, more interesting to cats, healthy food, in the future, at which time, I will surely try it again. I also saw, besides Donna’s reply, many cats that absolutely love it, even though a few didn’t like it. Please go ahead and make one that our cats will eat. By the way, we live in a large apartment complex where there are many strays, and some that have homes with their people, and they all eat here because we feed canned and dry, plus water. What they leave for later, the white wing doves jump down to eat, even though they have plenty of their own food. Wow, I just got the idea of feeding the cat food to the white wings. They always clean up the patio really well. Also, I tried to put my other email address in the slot at the top of this rambling note, but the system would not allow me to do so. My other email is (seagullboi@aim.com).

I have two long hair cats, both female. The younger one started not eating well and just stopped. It had my vet confused about what was wrong with her. Blood work was ok and she had her teeth cleaned, so no prob with that. I tried canned and dry foods from Cat Chow to $50 a bag, nothing got her to eat well and keep it down. The vet put her on Cat I/D and she started to keep it down and was told to try a new food to mix in for a few weeks. I tried the canned Evolve first and she loved it, so I got the dry now to try. Both of my cats love it and sit on the table and beg for it with cat meows. I will keep using Evolve as long as my cats will eat it.

  • Sharon

I have 3 cats, and my youngest is a long hair and she’s had skin allergies and terrible hair balls, Some one at wal-mart gave me the recommendation for this food so I figured why not I’ll try anything to get her to stop throwing up. I mixed it with cat chow naturals that I already had and wow what a difference, hasn’t had a hairball in the last 2 weeks, her skin is clearing up and she seems a lot more calm and happy. Also, my oldest cat is almost 14, and pretty healthy for the most part, his coat has never been more shiny. Mind you I’ve been mixing it with cat chow naturals, but I think once I run out of the cat chow, I’ll be going with this all the time! Definitely going to recommend it to everyone :-)

  • R.B. Bingham

I have all 5 of my cats on Evolve and no problems. Also my dog is eating the chicken food and she is fine although the stool is larger than with previous food, but the weight is now right on target for her breed.

I HAVE NEVER BEEN TO THIS SITE, MUCH LESS WRITTEN THIS LONG THING BEFORE! Our cat has a sensitive stomach, so we read the labels on everything we buy carefully. We usually feed different formulas of Blue Buffalo, which we can only find at the pet stores. We saw Evolve in our grocery store and decided to try it because it seemed like a good thing to try. Since it was more expensive than most others, we figured it must be very good cat food. More expensive usually gets us healthy dry food that agrees with our cat He usually eats new food that we try on him. The first time he tries something new, he gobbles it up, even though he doesn’t eat a lot of it after the initial gobbling up. He is addicted to canned food, so I treat him with a spoonful a couple of times a day. The second time we put Evolve in his dish for his daily healthy food, he went to his dish, smelled it and absolutely would not eat it. I tried for several days to get him to eat it and he just refused! We feed 5 stray cats daily, two or three times a day, since they stare at us through the patio glass door, and look really pitiful until we get up to put their food out. They always act like they are starving, although we know there are other families that also feed them daily. Since our cat would absolutely NOT eat the Evolve Maintenance with Chicken and Rice, we decided we would not waste it, so we fed it to the outside “pitiful, starving” strays. Even THEY wouldn’t eat it. So far, nobody likes it, and they absolutely refuse to eat it, even though they gobble up everything else that we feed them. It can’t be that great if our cat, won’t get near it and all the strays even won’t touch. They will sit and wait, sometimes hours with their pitiful look, until we bring something we know they like. We have fed the strays most other brands at our grocery store, cheap and not so cheap. All of that, they seem to really like, and their coats look shiny and are softer than we we first say them! I guess cats really are smarter than we give them credit for! We will never buy evolve again. We have returned to Blue Buffalo for our cat. The cats around here (our cat, and also the strays) certainly have us, their staff, well trained.

      • Mark W

The fact that your cats and the strays don’t like it does not mean a whole lot. Cats are finicky. Most finicky American PEOPLE don’t like health food either. So your opinion about the food does not mean a whole lot when it is based on the taste appeal alone, from a select group of cats, many of whom have been fed UTTER JUNK FOOD for a long time. Try to get a kid who eats pizza and McDonalds and potato chips all of the time to eat a salad and a grilled chicken sandwich on a whole wheat roll. You get my point. Or maybe you don’t!

  • Lisa

My cats inhaled evolve dry. They like it.
Apparently tired of friskies. Thank goodness
they like it. My 5 dogs like the dry
    evolve too.Yippee!

  • Charlotte

I love the Evolve Cat Maintenance food. My cats seem to be more satisfied by this food b/c they eat less than the ordinary brands I was giving them. Also the ordinary brands had mostly corn, wheat and other fillers which made the cat poop stink. I’ve been buying at WalMart but our local store suddenly stopped carrying it. I had to buy an ordinary brand b/c I was completely out. Now I’ve having a little trouble getting them back to eating the Evolve. They ate the Evolve great before and always came running when I put food out. Now they go to the bowl, sniff it and walk away. Well, I’m not giving any cat treats until they are all back to eating Evolve. 2 of the cats have already returned to eating Evolve within 2 days so I think the others will come around before long.

  • Marlana

The ingredients are similar to Blue Buffalo and close to half the cost. It doesn’t have life source bits like Blue does but now that I have 3 cats I just can’t afford Blue anymore. Couldn’t find anything close in quality to BB at any pet store or grocery store for cheaper until I checked a wal mart in my area and found this cat food. The cats prefer fish flavored food but I can only find it in chicken. They are eating it but I can tell they miss their fishy BB. Hopefully this brand comes out with a fish formula so my cats can fully enjoy mealtime again.

  • Amanda

I need a Cat Food that is Low Magnesium and Low Ash.

Any Suggestion on other brands that fit the description. Organic without Ingredients Cats wouldn’t eat in the Wild is very important, too.

  • Amanda

Is Evolve good for male Cats who have had Urinary Tract Blockage’ in the past? Evolve has ‘Maganese Sulfate’ and ‘Maganese – something – else’ in the ingredients but it doesn’t say HOW much. My Cat needs Low Magnesium and Low Ash Food.

I’m also looking for Cat Food that is Gluten – Free, Organic without ingredients like Corn and the kind of carbohydrates Cats would never eat in the Wild. Affordable is good to but when it comes to his health, price can be negotiable pricey or not.

    • angela

You should never feed a cat with urinary blockage dry food. My Siamese cat almost died from this condition.. The only cat food you should be feeding your cat is canned or homemade.

      • Diana C

My 4 yr old female has battled struvite crystals since feb. and I have resarched everything there is about cat food. I have tried every canned cat food on the market to get her to eat it exclusively. Sometimes there was 7 or 8 opened cans in the refrigerator. Finally she is free of crytals….
We had utrasounds, cyntesis(spelled wrong),urinalysis(sometimes evry two weeks). She had one infection during this time, so she was on antibiotics.
According to my research, any canned cat food is okay, because it is the moisture you are going for.She will eat friskies and Natural Life. Dry food is still Hills c/d mixed with Blue Buffalo.
So she gets canned food 3 x a day and a little over 1/4 cup dry food. She also gets a Real Chicken food topper(freeze dried chicken) if she wont eat the canned food I opened that day.
If the crystals come back she is put on Hills s/d for two weeks. Then back to the other combo. I am not happy about the quality of this food….but I think crystals is more dangerous than bad food.
My info sources are catinfo.org or
        dry food comparison chart.
        Good Luck!

    • Aaron

I can’t speak as an expert or anything but my wife’s cat is pushing 10 or 11 years old and he’s always had urination problems. I just thought he didn’t drink enough water but she was concerned enough to talk me into the Evolve food (we swapped from Cat Chow). It took a couple of months and we noticed that most of his issues kinda’ cleared up.
Again, not really an expert opinion but for what it’s worth there’s one observation.

    • teleute1313

Manganese and magnesium are two completely different elements. Unless you see something else on the ingredient list that’s a cause for concern, your cat should be fine. The most important thing for cats with urinary problems is moisture, though, so you should be feeding canned food with extra water mixed in in addition to any dry.

  • Sally Dee

This is the only cat food that I’ve tried so far that my sensitive cats do not vomit back up. With all the other cat foods, I find piles of vomited cat food around the house. Lovely. Not a single vomit pile with Evolve. Plus, all six of the cats love it.

  • McG97801

i have 2 cats that will absolutely not eat evolve. i would have better luck filling their bowl with kitty litter. worst cat food ever and it isn’t cheap.

  • Beth

and my stray, Jolson, I took in last November I really wanted foods I could IDENTIFY, know & approve what the ingredients were in. For tinned he liked the Wellness right off the bat!

For dry they are really pricey and I saw this EVOLVE bag at walmart ingredients sounded Good went online looking for reviews & found them here~! Yes No food is perfect but overall it seemed a popular choice.
So I went back and picked it up; 15lb for $20 (the other walmart by me it was $24). Mixed it with his Purina for the next 5 days and as I kept increasing it he kept eating less!………JUST PICKING OUT THE PURINA!!

Gave some to my friend to try with her cat NO GO!

and the neighbors 2 outdoor cats are always over mooching! for the last 8 years~! They were the reason I stocked cat supplies we always had Dogs! Same response 1 -2 bites of the kibble and NO THANKYOU!! and left!

    So this was a BUST!

I have 12 cats ranging in ages from 1 year thru 17 years. I was feeding them Taste of the Wild (awesome food choice) but with 12 cats it started getting too expensive so I was on the search for something I could afford. I couldn’t believe Wal-Mart had a quality cat food like Evolve. I was worried that the switch would harm them but they have maintained their silky coats, bright eyes, and little to no throwing up. Overall I am very pleased with this product. I just wish they had a senior product available at my Wal-Mart as 3 of my cats are 17 and there needs are different. I also wish our Wal-Mart carried the dog food. Fingers crossed they will in the future. Give this food a try, it’s worth it but remember to always switch your pet’s food slowly to avoid tummy troubles. :)

  • Beth

Originally my cat was eating IAMS as I lived with my parents at the time and it’s what my parents fed. After moving out I did more research and found out the ingredients weren’t very good. That’s how I found Evolve. It had better ingredients and wasn’t too expensive. At first my cat didn’t want to eat it. I stuck with it though and she did finally cave and began to eat it. As some have mentioned before me, I attribute it to being addicted to junk food. Who wants to eat a bowl of veggies when you’re used to hotdogs and fries?

Fast forward 9 months later and she is eating it all the time. She’ll even run to her bowl when I go to fill it up.

I also adopted a new kitty a few months ago who had terrible fur (shelter kitty) and his hair is so soft and fluffy now. Both have a lot of energy and are in good health. Neither are under or overweight and their bowel movements are good. Before switching I was having issues with my first kitty gaining weight and eating a lot. Even when I would withhold food she would still eat her entire bowl not long after I fed her. Since switching those issues are a thing of the past.

    • Mark W

The voice of reason! Thank You! Health food does not always taste good, especially after junk food!

Thanks for sharing your realistic experience and point of view!

  • Theresa

I have 3 lovely cats that I adore, am only 23 and on my own. Its been coming more clear to me that my animals need more than the cheap cat food that I can afford because I want to give them the best life possible. I’ve been gradually going up the scale of quality cat food and started them on organic Newmans Own cat food. Walmart no longer carries it. I went shopping just yesterday and searched for a good cat food that wasn’t junk. (I spent quite some time lol) I found one that was $20 for 6 lbs. (i forgot the name of it) Then I found evolve which was $20 for 15 lbs. I remember my friend buying it for his pit bulls saying it was a great quality food. The ingedient list is great, but it has a considerable amount of carbs. i brought it home and started my cats on it. they abosolutely love it! Looking forward to awesome results!

    • Suzanne

Our daughter has two cats and when she researched cat food she decided to feed them EVOLVE. They have eaten this food for nearly three years and have been doing well. She purchased a new bag a few weeks ago and the cats would not eat it. Gave them wet food, purchased a new bag of evolve and they still would not eat it. Today her six year old male was diagnosed by the Vet. As having severe liver damage and blockage. Waiting for the rest of the test results. In the meantime, their food has been changed and the younger cat is eating and doing well. She will still not eat the evolve.
We are very disappointed about the change in formula.

  • Susan Duncan

I have 3 cats on Evolve right now. One of them has a long thick coat. About a year ago he started scratching and biting his hair off and was almost bald on his hind quarters. The vets said it was allergies, gave him a bunch of shots and very expensive food! Nothing helped! After two weeks on Evolve he stopped chewing and scratching, his coat is coming back better than ever!! My other two seem to feel better as well. I’m trying to find it in the dog food because I believe it is a great product

  • Jill

I stumbled upon Evolve Dry Cat Food at Wal-Mart! I was surprised by the low price (less than $5 for 3 lbs). It was the only dry food that did not have by product in it. I had been looking for a new food for my cat because he had been vomiting. Ever since I switched him to Evolve (about 2 months ago), he has not vomited! Works like a charm. He seems to really like it. I do have to say that it is rather hard to find – I think WalMart & online is your best bet. I did try to get it last week at WM but it was sold out! Hoping it’s there next time…

  • donna

My cat that is 12 will not eat it at all… and I put some out yesterday for 3 stray cats that live in my neighborhood… Its all still there this morning!

  • tony James

Have been a Yorkie breeder for over 35 years. I have fed my dogs the very best-always a chicken based dog food an many times cat food. I never feed soy or corn based kibble.I started feeding Evolve cat food and my 3 Yorkie teeth are much cleaner, they have shinny coats and small firm stools and are super healthy. they love the food. I just had a perfect litter of 5 healthy babies. That means my stud and dam did very good on this diet and their old 10 year old friend is very healthy too,.Oh They no longer get yeasty ears either, maybe it is the probiotics.

  • Vanessa

I start my Cleo on Evolve about six months ago and notice at great different. Not only was she no longer always eating but her coat improve so much!!! I was feeding her Whisker compelete and notice she was fatting up, her coat was looking bad, she had gas all the time and i notice that the smell in her kitty litter box was starting to smell worst. I spoke with a worker at Petmarts make and you explain to me that the food i was feeding her was just junk food for kitty and she needed something more better. When i start looking more healthier foods the prices where crazy and on my budget i couldn’t pay $30 for every 5LB of food. I was about to give up when i saw a bag of Evolve at my local Stater Brothers and though well it’s on sale and it couldn’t hurt. Well i was surprise how quickly Cleo adapt to the change and all the problem she was seeming to have started going a way. I wasn’t clean the litter box three a day with no luck anymore the bad smell went away.No more bad gas moments. Her Coat is beautiful shinny gray again and she seem to be silming up a little which is great because i know she still has some more growning to do. I think Evolve can be a great choice for anyone that wants to get thier pet on good type of food without breaking thier wallet.

  • Deborah

I started my Himalayans on Evolve about 1 month ago. i had had these 2 girls for 1 month and they were 10 months old. they loved it. i have it in the auto feeder and they do eat it. they have not lost or gained weight. potty box is good. they were just to the vet yesterday for their annual shots. their hair is now wonderful looking and no more hair balls. they are very active and playful.
this week i got a 4 year old male Himi to go with them. he was not in that good of shape when i got him. but he likes the food and is now getting more active. i am sure his hair will do better also.
since i raise poodles i am seriously thinking of switching them over if they like it. they will not eat the blue buffalo or royal canine. they have always had eukenuba puppy small petit. and even tho they are adults they are in wonderful shape. the last poodle i raised on it lived 17 1/2 years very healthy. but i do like the ingredients better for evolve.

  • Don

I saw this in Walmart one shopping trip and decided to try it since they didn’t have the food I usually get, 9 Lives Plus Care for urinary tract problems. It sounded good, supposedly more meat, but still a lot of stuff I know cats don’t normally eat like rice, cranberries and blueberries, but it sounds healthy. My cats would not eat it at all. I’m glad I only bought a small bag. I didn’t notice any health problems, but then they didn’t eat much of it. It’s scary to think it may have been contaminated. Why can’t anybody make a cat food with just meat, no fillers? No corn?

    • nance

They do have many cat foods that do just contain meat… check it out the Healthy Natural Raw cat food or Wellness brand or any of the grain free cat foods also the reason your cats wont touch a better cat food is because you are feeding them cat junk food (9 Lives) and they are addicted to it.

      • Diana

Yet another “Pet Food Nazi” who thinks they love their pet more than you love yours if you fail to pass their “Food Test”. Heaven forbid you don’t feed raw!!! Why you shouldn’t even be ALLOWED to care for a pet!! (sarcasm intended)

  • Renee

I have been using Evolve for a year after going through countless, different foods. I work with cat rescue and have many, many cats eating it; cats from different ages to cats with diseases. The only cat I make an exception for would be a diabetic cat that needs higher protein/high fiber prescription food. It is true that some of the cats will “shun” the food. Many of your other foods are formulated with flavor enhancers and animal digest that make the food more tasty & appealing. If you were given two bowls of steamed broccoli, one with processed cheese sauce and one without…which will you want? I continue to serve Evolve and they will eat it when it is the only food available. I have noticed a huge improvement in my rescue animals from this food and will continue to use it as long as it stays good quality ingredients & an affordable price. All my cats have lost excess weight if overweight, remained active, have healthy coats and I have noticed marked improvement in litter box waste and smell. I see much less vomiting. This is a huge plus for having as many cats as I do. Even one of my foster cats with irritable bowel has improved greatly from this product. He has issues with most other foods. I don’t have any connection with this company or any reason to promote this product other than to let other people know what I have experienced from using this product. I am simply a cat rescue/foster person that spends a ton of money on products for the cats I care for. Evolve has been the best food overall when it comes to quality, price and performance. It would be nice if I got a “kick-back” or price break but I don’t. I read some reviews that other people have issues with it. I don’t know what to say about their cases but I have had great results overall. Quality food = Healthy cats, less vet bills, longer life. An affordable price for the food means I can rescue/rehabilitate and find homes for other cats in need.

Just fyi, many notable cat and dog foods were recalled. Some with good reason and some to err on the side of caution. I worked for Nutro at the time and found many highly reputable pet food companies to be affected.

  • bob

I’m noticing alot of comments saying their cats wont eat it. I have had my cats for 5 years. Purina One has been out of stock for over a week and they needed cat food. I bought this and my one cat will eat anything. THe other does not like this, even if i mix wet food in, she licks all the wet food off this stuff. For how natural this product is for the price, it was too good to be true. Why would all these cats turn down this product. Something is very fishy. Is it because there is less protein in here? Pet food is pet food, my cat that wont eat it eat the low quality brands no problem and she likes junk food too, chips, pasta, etc. I rarely if ever feed her these things but the point I am making is this EVOLVE is a major REDFLAG to the pet food industry.

    • Tays

Wouldn’t it be because of the favorings and salt added to other foods and, of course, present in all the junk you give to her???

  • Linda Brown

Have used your dry cat food for 3 yrs. I replaced Hills Science Diet and had no problems till my last purchase. I ordered directly for the ease of shopping. I was troubled when I opened the first bag and was overpowered with an odor that reeked of a petroleum product. Can’t get my cats to go near it! I opened the second bag and had the same reaction. I’m now lost and sadly have to find a new product! My mother also made the switch so sad we have cats with special needs. Sorry something went terribly wrong or you’ve changed your formula. Thank you

  • Domina

CHICKEN is no longer the first ingredient in the EVOLVE Maintenance Formula with Chicken cat food!

Today at 1:10pm MST I spoke with EVOLVE [TriumphPet] to ask why the bags I bought list different ingredients and in different order from all the reviews online AND from their own website.. and I was informed that 2 things have recently changed: 1. the process 2. the ingredients, but the website hasnt yet been updated. The NEW list of ingredients will be the same as on the bags I recently purchased, and the first 5 are as follows:
    1. Chicken Meal
    2. Ground Brown Rice
    3. Rice Flour
    4. CHICKEN
    5. Chicken Fat

This is just a heads-up for people like myself looking for real meat as the main ingredient, and is not meant as a criticism of EVOLVE cat food.

  • Kathy

WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS CAT FOOD THAT CATS, SUCH AS MINE, ARE GETTING VERY ILL/DYING FROM IT!! I have 6 indoor cats, 2 are kittens that were rescued separately. I have used Evolve for about 3 months. My 8years old cat was very fat. He’s been fat since birth. My 7yr old Kitty was average in weight. All my cats are extra fluffy. A couple weeks ago I noticed my 2 oldest were scary thin. I couldn’t see the problem but I could feel it. They were going to die. I STOPPED the giving them Evolve Cat Food right away since that was the only change we’ve had in several months. VET VERIFIED. It wasn’t from kittens, had them for 6months now. My 7yr. old is getting better since switching to IAMS KITTEN FOOD for more fat & PROTEIN!! However, my 8yr old cat might not make it. He won’t eat at all anymore. Cats need more protein than dogs VET VERIFIED!! I really thought that Evolve might be good but it’s so the opposite!! I will never buy this again. This experience is a first for me and I have rescued, fed of course, several hundreds of cats. Never AGAIN EVOLVE!!!

    • johnny

how long have you been working for Iams? that is one of the worst things u can feed a cat

    • jen

if thats the case that your cats were “scary thin” then you should have noticed it before it got that bad

    • David_L

I have been using Evolve for my 8 year old Egyptian Mau for a few months now and, except for me reducing her intake, to loose some of her extra pounds, she is doing fine. solid stool and no vomiting, (except when I have fed her from my table scraps… She loves bacon.)) She really likes her maintenance formula and (depending on where I give it ti her), thinks I’m giving her a special treat.
Put some in the bowl and she will eat most of the serving, (leaving some till later). Set some on the sewing machine by the window and, she rushes up there to scarf it down pronto!

I think Evolve is a good quality cat food at a great price.

    • Sarah

I switched to evolve about 4 weeks ago and my cat who weighed 25 pounds now weighed 19 pounds and had to have surgery yesterday because his colon was so backed up he hasn’t been able to go to the bathroom I know it has to be the food cause that is the only thing I have changed so $900 dollars later it is safe to say lI will never use this food again

  • Terri

I am looking for a dog food canned or dry that is manufactured in the United States not China!

    • Sandy

NUTRO has two plants manufacturing their dog and cat food – one is in Tennessee and the other is in California. I don’t even give my animals canned mackerel from China.

  • Lesa

I’ve been feeding this to my 4 indoor cats for the last couple of months. I have a male who has always puked and is still puking even on this food. 2 of my cats are now having blood in their stools. And all of them have stinky stools. I really liked the idea of this food and the price. But I’m thinking I’m going to have to find a different food. This all seems to have started when we switched to this one. They all eat it well, but it doesn’t seem to agree with their systems.

    • CLT

IF your cats have been vomiting for the long-term, with smelly stools, then I think you need to consult with a vet. Check for coccidia or giardia.

If that is ruled out, go to a single protein grain-free diet for a couple of months. Once pets become sensitized to a grain, they often become sensitized to the protein along with it. You may need to find a “novel” protein source, like duck.

  • Suze

I have 12 indoor cats and NONE of them like this food..(I had been feeding Purina One)..I find the food all over the floor as if they were hunting for something better. Not sure what it is about Evole..prehaps it is the shape/size of the kibble?

    • Sandy

Purina One Beyond is very good. I think it’s more expensive than Evolve. Used it in the past but switched to Evolve because the formula seemed more nutritious. Have not had any problems with the cats since I started using it a couple of months ago. I have cats ranging from 3 yrs old to 17 yrs. Switched slowly to acclimate their systems.

  • Donna

I just saw this at Wal-Mart today and picked up a small bag. I have two cats, one with major digestive issues. I have been using Blue Buffalo grain free which has helped, but at $20.00 for 5 pounds, it’s breaking the bank. Both cats ate this today and I didn’t have any problem so far, so fingers crossed!

  • Natalie

I love this food! I searched a long time for a cat food that had good wholesome healthy ingredients that wouldn’t break the budget. We have 2 cats & both like it. Since it takes a few days to get a cats system used to a new food I did notice some changes in the litter box but after a few days this cleared up and all has been good for over 6 months! I notice since switching their fur is now softer, shiny & one of our cats no longer over-eats which is what made me search out a good cat food. They both seem a lot healthier and I no longer have issues finding “arf” on the floor by surprise. I can’t believe there are so many unhealthy cat food choices out there & I’m ashamed I fed my pets garbage food for so long without knowing any better…I’m so happy to have found Evolve!!!

  • Cecil

Our cat did not like the this food, she would eat it but she had bowel problems and chucked this food up,I suppect because of the rice and vegies among other things, so we put her back on Iams, and she does very well with it; we had try to change because the vet told us she had allergies, better a little allergie problem than starving to death…

  • Kim

I have a 15 1/2 year old cat that has been a picky eater his entire life. He has always only liked Purina foods. He will only lick the jiuce from canned food. I saw Evolve at Walmart last night and decided it was worth the chance. I poured just a bit in his bowl and he gobbled it down. I had recently switched him to Iams Senior Plus because he is so old and getting thin and vomits ALL the time. He picked at it and only ate enough to keep him going I think. I am so happy that he likes the Evolve and I hope it helps with his vomiting issues too as many people have said that it did for their cat.

    • Tina

Your cat might be vomiting due to liver (renal) problems. Mine would project it and also had explosive diarrhea at times. He usually had those episodes when he had not eaten very much which let the liver toxins build up in his system. Just wanted to mention that in case you had not discussed anything with your vet. :)

  • Carol

I feel feeding my kids (cat & dog) a food with no wheat, corn or soy is very important in prevention of sickness. So was very happy to find this product at Wal-Mart and was very pleased with the price, but when I tried to feed it to my cat, he refused to eat. Tried several attempts to feed it and even added moisture with no success. We feed several stray cats (which eat everything) and they would not even eat it, and the funniest thing was when the wild skunks came looking for a snack, they too turned up their nose. Not sure why no one would eat it, but my money was a total loss with this product, so will be moving on. Good to hear the rest of you are having success – might be a bad batch or something but when wild animals that eat green meat from peoples trash won’t eat it – well that tells me a lot.

  • Megan

I love this food! All 3 of my kitties love it. My 9 year old kitty used to throw up every day. He hasn’t thrown up in months. Their fur is shiny. The litter doesn’t smell as bad. Evolve is our favorite by far. Will never go back to anything else.

  • Allyson

Just bought some. One cat will eat it, the other will not and wants her old Purina One. That’s the only food she seems to like (I left Evolve in her bowl for 2 days and she followed me around crying) Neither cat will eat canned food, so I guess they are picky. Will keep trying as the older cat likes it fine.

  • Darlene

I think this food is great. My 6 yr. old cat was vomiting daily – now very seldom. I fed Nutro Max for years but no more. I hope Walmart continues to carry this Evolve Cat Food.

  • MomOf2Cats

I, too, have a cat with severe food allergies. We switched over to Evolve and the vomitting ceased almost immediately. After a few months, we had an ENTIRELY new cat. His personality has changed where he is more active, alert, and PLAYFUL and (dare I say) happy; as are we! The difference is NIGHT and DAY. I can’t even imagine how he must have FELT for such a dramatic change. The vet told us she felt he had allergies, but it would be VERY costly to pinpoint the actual allergen. So we are figuring this out by trial & error- and RESEARCH. We were unsure if it was food allergy alone OR a combo of food & seasonal allergies (environmental-summer). Now that the summer months are upon us and he has been HEALTHY and happy for the last 3 months- he’s starting to sneeze, scratch and bite. Now…to find a remedy for summer/seasonal allergies! UGH! Poor cat.

  • Susan

I began using this with my pet cats (4) and my rescue cats for adoption (12) about three months ago. All of them are eating it, although my personal cats beg for treats more often than they used to. Among my rescue cats I have one cat that would throw up almost daily. With Evolve this is been reduced to perhaps once every week and a half or so. The cats eat less, which has reduced my costs, and the food costs less than what I was feeding. Recently it has been on sale, down to $16 from $20. This is incredible compared to Purina One, my previous brand, which has corn and seems to go up a couple of bucks every year. I’m very happy with the foil bags as well, although I try to use them a second time whenever possible.

I have two cats who were quite tubby, and they have slowly been losing weight. My normal and light weight cats seem to be doing OK. I’m very happy with this food and dread the day when I can’t find it, as Walmart seems to be the only store that carries it in my area.

  • Geri DG

Highly recommended by vet (and others). Unfortunately neither of our two cats would eat it despite several attempts.

  • Tracy

I came on this site looking for coupons. Then I start reading the reviews, which started off scarry! Both of my indoor cats have been eating this product, and neither of them puke it up. I decided to try it because I was impressed there were no filler and all natural cat food.

  • doc

I switched my 4 cats to evolve and i’m glad I did. No more puking, fewer less stinky stools and less hair loss and a shiny coat.I alway feed Purina indoor cat formula and i’m so happy I made the switch. I understand that some cats can get sick off food, one of mine would always get urinary tract infections from eating whiskis cat food so I know it can happen. But for me and my Kitties i’m so glad I found evolve.

  • Finally!

Finally someone makes a catfood my babies like! My kitties were losing fur, and shots were expensive because of their allergies. Did research on this product and decided to give it a go. So very glad I did! My cats fur is growing back thicker and healthier looking, they are even more spunky! No more allergy shots!! Thank you for this wonderful product!!

  • Beverly Foster

I was glad to read these reviews. I had felt good about purchasing Evolve after reading the ingredients. I decided to give my 3 indoor cats and 1 outdoor cat Evolve in the mornings and Purina Naturals (the brand I’ve used for the past couple years) in the evenings. They eat barely any of the Evolve and then cry for hours for the Purina. I never thought about returning it to WalMart but wondering if I should make the cats hang in there and get used to it.

  • Deb

I found this food at Walmart and chose to try it because we’ve had serious puking problems with 2 of our 4 cats. We have been through several brands with quality ingredients and none of them have helped until this one. As soon as they were changed over to this, the puking became nonexistent!! I’m talking from several times per day(per cat) to nothing! Their activity level is healthy and appropriate to their ages, their fur is healthy and none of them have had urinary problems other than the one who had them before (behavioral). Our Vet is satisfied as well. In the end, it’s what works well for you and your cat. Not every cat is the same, thankfully there are choices out there-just be careful to find the best quality you can that your cat will eat and stay healthy on.

  • Amy

Ingredients look good, but unfortunately my two cats, who are not usually picky, will not eat this food. I’m not sure what the problem is. I can’t think of any other catfood they would not eat. Going to have to return to Wal-Mart.

  • Steve

We have always made sure our pets are well cared for. This begins with their food. After carefully reading and analyzing the main ingredients in the so called specialty brands, we realized that corn meal, gluten, and many other ‘fillers’ are the primary ingredients in those brands. It’s even worse with the heavily advertised brands.
Evolve DOES NOT have the filler garbage in it, and our cat LOVES IT! His coat has dramatically improved, he has a high energy level, etc. He has smaller and regular stools…unlike what some of you have stated, and us very healthy. We buy it at Walmart for much less $$ than the esoteric brands, and those brands are inferior to Evolve.
The writer of this article should be required to check his info as it is wrong. This is theBEST CAT FOOD we have ever bought!

  • Sandi

We just bought it. Some people whose cats are having problems on Evolve might consider it is a lot more protein than they would be getting otherwise with foods where a lot of the protein content is counted from the corn and fillers they don’t utilize well, not from actual meat. Good luck.

  • Sadie’s Mommy

Starting feeding this to my cat, I mixed it at first with the cat food she was on and then started with just Evolve, she’s puking it up and barley eats it, she even pours it on the floor, she just hates it! I’ll be going back to what she was eating happily before!

  • Liz

I bought this food 2 weeks ago at a local Walmart. Two of my cats are now peeing blood and one is overnight at the vet. They are indoors only. The only change has been this food and the problems started with both cats the day after they started this food. No more dry food period for my cats! Please do not feed ANY dry food to your cats if they have struvite crystals! I will not use this product again.

    • S

I switched my cat to Evolve about 3-4 weeks ago and my cat started dripping pee around the house earlier this week. This morning he started peeing blood and I was able to get in with a vet but he was not able to get a urine sample so we are treating him for a bladder infection for right now. The only change has been the cat food and my cat has never had any health issues in the past. (he is 5 and indoor only)

Was wondering if you were able to find out exactly why Evolve was causing your cats to urinate blood or if it was definitely Evolve that was causing it.
Any information you may have is appreciated :). I’m very worried.

  • penny

I just found this food at Walmart in Oceanside California. Usually Walmart will carry similar brands store to store, you could check your local store? I have 9 cats and I always avoid cat food with corn or soy in it,(including soybean oil) while not going above 32/33% protein, it has really helped with one of my “skin allergy” cats, he doesn’t scratch and bite at himself since he’s been on this type of diet, no crystal in uriniary tract, and not loose bowels either. The cats don’t seem to care what the food tastes like so they have been eating this up.

  • Miriam

I have 7 cats. I purchased Evolve cat food because some of them have problems with hairballs and puking. I thought that giving them an “all natural” food might help. Well, I’m glad to say that they have not puked up this food. Unfortunately, they have not eaten it either. When I poured it in the bowl they all ran over with much excitement that new food had arrived. In turn, they all smelled it and walked away. I have one rescued cat that was homeless for some time and will usually eat anything. She did not even want this food. Guess I need to mix it in with something else. Wish they would add something to make this food more appealing.

  • Michelle

This site needs updated. Like everyone else said, there is NO corn, wheat, soy in this cat food. My cats eat less on this food and digest it beautifully. It is available at Walmart, FINALLY a good food that is available at Wally world. :)

  • Jim

Evolve is a great cat food. As for it making Ri’s cat sick….I’d look elsewhere for the cause. I have four cats and they truly thrive on this food. No corn, wheat, or soy…..Perfect!!

  • Sharon

You REALLY need to update your review. There is NO Corn, Wheat OR Soy in Evolve dry cat food. My cat suffers with urinary crystals and the wrong food will quickly kill him. I mean once I feed him food he couldn’t handle and he came close to dying within 6 days. He has been on Evolve Adult Chicken Formula for two months and he is in GREAT health and he loves it. Sadly, Hannaford Grocery store seems to have stopped carrying it and now I am having trouble finding it. Finally an affordable, quality cat food, so they said they’ll get it back.

    • Dolores LaRiviere

      I found Evolve at walmart….

      • Patti

Cannot conclude anything about this food even though I`ve been using it more than anything else for 2+years although the puking was eliminated once I started using it. BUT, two recent red flags are the fact that they seem to have lost interest(indoor and outdoor cats alike) and one older indoor cat is having a very mystifying illness that may be cancer(refer to prior commentary on possible ethoxyquin in the fishmeal in Evolve.) Also why are there so many recent definitively negatve remarks about this food? I really did want to be able to rely on this food being what it appears to be on the label…….

    • Sandra

We picked up ours at Walmart. for a very reasonable price compared to Evo we have to get at the grange.

  • Ri

I started using EVOLVE 6 months ago for my kitties, all 3 are now very ill. The health issues they are experiencing was not an issue before using this product. I will never use it again!

    • Boo

I bought this because I’ve been feeling guilty about my cat being overweight and I’ve always been a bit miffed about the lack of dietary information provided by pet food manufacturers. Well, he’s not happy about the change, but he has no other choice. He grudgingly eats token amounts and yells at me whenever he thinks I should know better. If we make it through this bag, and if Wallyworld continues to carry it, we may have a new lifestyle for the chubby kitty!

  • Alexa

Evolve natural kitten or adult not contain corn, wheat and soy.Its the new formula now and this web review old formula.I feed my cat evolve since two years ago.I love evolve catfood coz fit to digest them.Nothing have diarhea, hard stool and reduce poop smell. But my cat not likey taste of evolve,if not very very hungry.I mix evolve with another brand (strong smell)..
I hope evolve catfood fix taste and smell soon.So my cat only eat your kibble.

  • no

I don’t know what pet food you are reviewing but i buy evolve cat food purely and simply because it does NOT have corn in it!

Evolve Cat Food Recall

In the pet food recalls of 2007, Evolve did have one formula that was listed as being recalled. The Evolve dry kitten formula was recalled, which was in a 3lb, flexible foil bag. In order to make sure that your cat’s food is safe, it’s always highly recommended that you check the FDA’s pet food recall website. This will help you to stay updated on the latest pet food recall information.

The Evolve line of cat food formulas seems to always have a meat as their first ingredient. In some formulas, the first two ingredients are meat-based. However, the Evolve formulas are fairly heavy in carbohydrates, with simple carbohydrates dominating the top of the ingredients list. There is also fish meal in Evolve cat food, though it’s unclear if the fish meal contains the possibly harmful component ethoxyquin. Evolve cat food does contain many fruits, vegetables and vitamin supplements.

Evolve Allergies

Evolve does not contain ingredients that normally gives cat an allergic reaction. If your cat has a specific allergy, you should always read the ingredients of any cat food formula.

    • nobaddog February 9, 2015 at 9:17 pm #

Hows your kitty? I was thinking of using this food. My cats love it. Have you any more info on the cause of the stones, was it really the food? Hows the other kitty?

      • Luna.mom40 February 10, 2015 at 1:58 pm #

I was fine with the ingredients and price, but my cat won’t touch it. I tried mixing it 50/50 with her old purina, but she picked out the purina and left the evolve in the bowl. Seems like it’s hit or miss with cats.

Evolve canned food contains Carrageenan. NOT something you want to be feeding your cats.

      • Mark W October 29, 2014 at 6:54 pm #

The fact that your cats and the strays don’t like it does not mean a whole lot. Cats are finicky. Most finicky American PEOPLE don’t like health food either. So your opinion about the food does not mean a whole lot when it is based on the taste appeal alone, from a select group of cats, many of whom have been fed UTTER JUNK FOOD for a long time. Try to get a kid who eats pizza and McDonalds and potato chips all of the time to eat a salad and a grilled chicken sandwich on a whole wheat roll. You get my point. Or maybe you don’t!

  16. Lisa March 9, 2014 at 3:47 pm #

My cats inhaled evolve dry. They like it.
Apparently tired of friskies. Thank goodness
they like it. My 5 dogs like the dry
    evolve too.Yippee!

  17. Charlotte December 14, 2013 at 7:05 pm #

  18. Marlana November 26, 2013 at 10:30 am #

I need a Cat Food that is Low Magnesium and Low Ash.

Any Suggestion on other brands that fit the description. Organic without Ingredients Cats wouldn’t eat in the Wild is very important, too.

  20. Amanda October 24, 2013 at 4:26 pm #

    • angela October 31, 2013 at 6:24 pm #

You should never feed a cat with urinary blockage dry food. My Siamese cat almost died from this condition.. The only cat food you should be feeding your cat is canned or homemade.

      • Diana C November 10, 2013 at 7:59 am #

        Good Luck!

    • teleute1313 October 9, 2014 at 7:26 am #

Manganese and magnesium are two completely different elements. Unless you see something else on the ingredient list that’s a cause for concern, your cat should be fine. The most important thing for cats with urinary problems is moisture, though, so you should be feeding canned food with extra water mixed in in addition to any dry.

This is the only cat food that I’ve tried so far that my sensitive cats do not vomit back up. With all the other cat foods, I find piles of vomited cat food around the house. Lovely. Not a single vomit pile with Evolve. Plus, all six of the cats love it.

and my stray, Jolson, I took in last November I really wanted foods I could IDENTIFY, know & approve what the ingredients were in.

  25. Beth August 8, 2013 at 10:05 am #

    • Mark W October 29, 2014 at 6:59 pm #

The voice of reason! Thank You! Health food does not always taste good, especially after junk food!

Thanks for sharing your realistic experience and point of view!

No corn?

    • nance March 18, 2013 at 12:49 pm #

They do have many cat foods that do just contain meat… check it out the Healthy Natural Raw cat food or Wellness brand or any of the grain free cat foods also the reason your cats wont touch a better cat food is because you are feeding them cat junk food (9 Lives) and they are addicted to it.

      • Diana May 1, 2013 at 6:08 pm #

Yet another “Pet Food Nazi” who thinks they love their pet more than you love yours if you fail to pass their “Food Test”. Heaven forbid you don’t feed raw!!! Why you shouldn’t even be ALLOWED to care for a pet!! (sarcasm intended)

  36. bob February 18, 2013 at 5:47 am #

    • Tays March 8, 2013 at 11:03 pm #

Wouldn’t it be because of the favorings and salt added to other foods and, of course, present in all the junk you give to her???

Have used your dry cat food for 3 yrs. I replaced Hills Science Diet and had no problems till my last purchase. I ordered directly for the ease of shopping. I was troubled when I opened the first bag and was overpowered with an odor that reeked of a petroleum product. Can’t get my cats to go near it! I opened the second bag and had the same reaction. I’m now lost and sadly have to find a new product! My mother also made the switch so sad we have cats with special needs. Sorry something went terribly wrong or you’ve changed your formula. Thank you

Never AGAIN EVOLVE!!!

how long have you been working for Iams? that is one of the worst things u can feed a cat

    • jen March 6, 2013 at 10:43 pm #

if thats the case that your cats were “scary thin” then you should have noticed it before it got that bad

    • Sarah April 12, 2013 at 3:23 pm #

I switched to evolve about 4 weeks ago and my cat who weighed 25 pounds now weighed 19 pounds and had to have surgery yesterday because his colon was so backed up he hasn’t been able to go to the bathroom I know it has to be the food cause that is the only thing I have changed so $900 dollars later it is safe to say lI will never use this food again

I am looking for a dog food canned or dry that is manufactured in the United States not China!

    • Sandy February 20, 2013 at 5:04 pm #

NUTRO has two plants manufacturing their dog and cat food – one is in Tennessee and the other is in California. I don’t even give my animals canned mackerel from China.

    • CLT March 1, 2013 at 11:27 pm #

IF your cats have been vomiting for the long-term, with smelly stools, then I think you need to consult with a vet. Check for coccidia or giardia.

If that is ruled out, go to a single protein grain-free diet for a couple of months. Once pets become sensitized to a grain, they often become sensitized to the protein along with it. You may need to find a “novel” protein source, like duck.

I have 12 indoor cats and NONE of them like this food..(I had been feeding Purina One)..I find the food all over the floor as if they were hunting for something better. Not sure what it is about Evole..prehaps it is the shape/size of the kibble?

    • Sandy February 20, 2013 at 5:09 pm #

Purina One Beyond is very good. I think it’s more expensive than Evolve. Used it in the past but switched to Evolve because the formula seemed more nutritious. Have not had any problems with the cats since I started using it a couple of months ago. I have cats ranging from 3 yrs old to 17 yrs. Switched slowly to acclimate their systems.

  43. Donna November 11, 2012 at 3:51 pm #

  44. Natalie November 7, 2012 at 11:20 pm #

  45. Cecil October 10, 2012 at 7:01 pm #

Our cat did not like the this food, she would eat it but she had bowel problems and chucked this food up,I suppect because of the rice and vegies among other things, so we put her back on Iams, and she does very well with it; we had try to change because the vet told us she had allergies, better a little allergie problem than starving to death…

  46. Kim September 8, 2012 at 1:30 pm #

    • Tina December 13, 2012 at 8:05 am #

Your cat might be vomiting due to liver (renal) problems. Mine would project it and also had explosive diarrhea at times. He usually had those episodes when he had not eaten very much which let the liver toxins build up in his system. Just wanted to mention that in case you had not discussed anything with your vet. :)

  48. Megan August 7, 2012 at 2:23 pm #

I love this food! All 3 of my kitties love it. My 9 year old kitty used to throw up every day. He hasn’t thrown up in months. Their fur is shiny. The litter doesn’t smell as bad. Evolve is our favorite by far. Will never go back to anything else.

  49. Allyson July 27, 2012 at 7:07 pm #

  50. Darlene July 22, 2012 at 9:09 am #

I think this food is great. My 6 yr. old cat was vomiting daily – now very seldom. I fed Nutro Max for years but no more. I hope Walmart continues to carry this Evolve Cat Food.

  51. MomOf2Cats July 15, 2012 at 12:59 pm #

UGH! Poor cat.

  52. Susan June 24, 2012 at 11:33 pm #

  53. Geri DG June 23, 2012 at 11:48 pm #

Highly recommended by vet (and others). Unfortunately neither of our two cats would eat it despite several attempts.

  54. Tracy March 13, 2012 at 4:25 pm #

I came on this site looking for coupons. Then I start reading the reviews, which started off scarry! Both of my indoor cats have been eating this product, and neither of them puke it up. I decided to try it because I was impressed there were no filler and all natural cat food.

  55. doc February 24, 2012 at 10:59 pm #

  56. Finally! January 25, 2012 at 5:43 pm #

  57. Beverly Foster January 25, 2012 at 5:37 pm #

  58. Deb January 23, 2012 at 9:39 am #

  59. Amy January 13, 2012 at 10:48 am #

Ingredients look good, but unfortunately my two cats, who are not usually picky, will not eat this food. I’m not sure what the problem is. I can’t think of any other catfood they would not eat. Going to have to return to Wal-Mart.

  60. Steve December 27, 2011 at 4:50 pm #

  61. Sandi December 20, 2011 at 2:19 pm #

We just bought it. Some people whose cats are having problems on Evolve might consider it is a lot more protein than they would be getting otherwise with foods where a lot of the protein content is counted from the corn and fillers they don’t utilize well, not from actual meat. Good luck.

  62. Sadie's Mommy December 16, 2011 at 8:26 am #

Starting feeding this to my cat, I mixed it at first with the cat food she was on and then started with just Evolve, she’s puking it up and barley eats it, she even pours it on the floor, she just hates it! I’ll be going back to what she was eating happily before!

  63. Liz December 2, 2011 at 3:01 am #

    • S August 9, 2012 at 1:53 pm #

I switched my cat to Evolve about 3-4 weeks ago and my cat started dripping pee around the house earlier this week. This morning he started peeing blood and I was able to get in with a vet but he was not able to get a urine sample so we are treating him for a bladder infection for right now. The only change has been the cat food and my cat has never had any health issues in the past. (he is 5 and indoor only)

Was wondering if you were able to find out exactly why Evolve was causing your cats to urinate blood or if it was definitely Evolve that was causing it.
Any information you may have is appreciated :). I’m very worried.

  64. penny October 30, 2011 at 6:25 pm #

  65. Miriam October 16, 2011 at 3:45 pm #

  66. Michelle September 26, 2011 at 10:30 am #

This site needs updated. Like everyone else said, there is NO corn, wheat, soy in this cat food. My cats eat less on this food and digest it beautifully. It is available at Walmart, FINALLY a good food that is available at Wally world. :)

  67. Jim August 20, 2011 at 6:01 pm #

Evolve is a great cat food. As for it making Ri’s cat sick….I’d look elsewhere for the cause. I have four cats and they truly thrive on this food. No corn, wheat, or soy…..Perfect!!

  68. Sharon August 19, 2011 at 3:47 am #

    • Dolores LaRiviere December 1, 2011 at 8:41 pm #

      I found Evolve at walmart….

      • Patti February 22, 2013 at 7:38 am #

Cannot conclude anything about this food even though I`ve been using it more than anything else for 2+years although the puking was eliminated once I started using it. BUT, two recent red flags are the fact that they seem to have lost interest(indoor and outdoor cats alike) and one older indoor cat is having a very mystifying illness that may be cancer(refer to prior commentary on possible ethoxyquin in the fishmeal in Evolve.) Also why are there so many recent definitively negatve remarks about this food? I really did want to be able to rely on this food being what it appears to be on the label…….

    • Sandra December 20, 2011 at 2:13 pm #

We picked up ours at Walmart. for a very reasonable price compared to Evo we have to get at the grange.

  69. Ri August 7, 2011 at 5:26 pm #

I started using EVOLVE 6 months ago for my kitties, all 3 are now very ill. The health issues they are experiencing was not an issue before using this product. I will never use it again!

    • Boo September 19, 2012 at 1:23 pm #

I bought this because I’ve been feeling guilty about my cat being overweight and I’ve always been a bit miffed about the lack of dietary information provided by pet food manufacturers. Well, he’s not happy about the change, but he has no other choice. He grudgingly eats token amounts and yells at me whenever he thinks I should know better. If we make it through this bag, and if Wallyworld continues to carry it, we may have a new lifestyle for the chubby kitty!

  70. Alexa July 24, 2011 at 10:11 am #

  71. no July 7, 2011 at 9:49 pm #

I don’t know what pet food you are reviewing but i buy evolve cat food purely and simply because it does NOT have corn in it!
