The company who makes Avoderm cat food is called Breeder’s Choice Pet Foods. Breeder’s Choice first introduced the Avoderm pet food formulas in 1982. At the time, Avoderm was marketed as being a pet food formula designed to help cure specific health problems. Avoderm Cat Food Ingredients

Avoderm formulas have undergone a bit of a renovation in recent years. While Avoderm formulas mostly include corn among their first five ingredients, Avoderm has recently introduced a “corn free” dry formula for adult cats. The interesting thing about the avocado ingredients in Avoderm, is that they aren’t present until a bit further down on the ingredients list. In general, avocado meal and avocado oil are the two most common avocado-based ingredients. Aside from the one corn-free formula, other dry Avoderm formulas all contain corn and corn gluten among their first five ingredients.

Avoderm Cat Food Allergies

Avoderm does have one dry corn-free formula, which may be appropriate for cats with corn-based allergies. However, since all of the other dry formulas include a significant amount of corn, cats with allergies may not do well on these formulas. Customer reviews of Avoderm cat food are mixed. While some cat owners seem to love the Avoderm formulas, the fact that many of the formulas are corn-heavy has created a lot of customer backlash.     I have one cat who has reacted well to avoderm; the other has become entirely incapacitated – severe muscle deterioration to the point of not being able to walk, lift her head, or drink water. since shifting her off the food, she has rebounded nearly entirely. NO BUENO, avoderm.

    I have a cat that has had a diarrhea problem ever since I got him. I used to feed him Petsmart’s kitten formula with oatmeal in it, which solved his problem, and then they changed their formula. I finally tried Avoderm Salmon and Brown Rice dry, after going through many other brands, and he has had no loose stools since! He is going on 9 years old and is very healthy on this food.

    Hi,
    I’ve been experimenting w my recently adopted shelter cat by giving him higher quality food than what was given him in the shelter. I go between wellness, blue, innova and avoderm. I bought only two cans of avoderm, the first can he enjoyed and ate up all of it. I started reading mixed reviews on avoderm however and decided I didn’t want to continue buying it. I still had the other can and fed it to him the other day. I can’t remember the exact flavor name, but I think it was seafood stew or something like that. I saw mini sized shrimp in the can and was impressed how natural it was. As I scooped it out on the plate however, I noticed something not normal, it was a t-bone about 1/2 inch in size, hard as a rock! Needless to say, I did not feed my cat this. Imagine if my cat ate this! He would have totally choked or had it lodged in his throat! No more avoderm for me ever. I am writing to alert everyone of this near unfortunate event. Please look at your food (any brand) before feeding! Thank you.

    Canned chicken chunks in gravy is one of the best wet foods you can be. The result has been clear eyes, shiny coat and happy cats. Vets comments on health and avoderm have been positive too.

    My cat does not like the taste of Avoderm, and due to this I can’t feed it to her. I would say to be wary of Avoderm becasue of the corn and avocado issue. I don’t think cats would eat corn or avocados in the wild, and probably should not in a can either. If you still want to try it, test out one can on your cat because they may not like it.

    I have two cats that have been on Avoderm for over a year. One of my cats had a severe back injury before we got him (possibly hit by a car), and because of this has a lot of digestive problems. We tried many different cat foods that he would get constipated and vomiting. When he was about six, I really thought he was about ready to die, he looked that sick. Then I switched to Avoderm, and he is a completely different cat. I give both cats canned food in the morning, and dry food at night. My vet did suggest that I put about 1/8 of a teaspoon of Miralax in Gizmo’s food. Since the cats share dishes, I put it in both dishes. I would definitely recommend Avoderm!

    My cat was just diagnosed with pancreatitus and is now on prednisolone. I have been racking my brain to figure if any food changes caused it, even though my vet said it was more likely due to her age of 17, rather than food. Her bloodwork six months ago was fine, but recently she had been vomiting for several days and had been losing alot of weight (I had attributed the weight loss to old age). After reviewing my purchases from Petsmart (if you have a PetPerks card you can look at your purchase history if you register online), I am horrified to see that it was about 4 months ago that I had switched to Avoderm (canned food), because I had been experimenting with higher quality protein foods, in an attempt to avoid other foods with meat by-produts. Now after reading that avocado can cause pancreatitis I am sick to my stomach for not researching Avoderm before giving it to my cat. I am now returning every can of Avoderm cat food that I have in the house – and I WILL be contacting Avoderm. Even before this, I had just noticed that the Avoderm cans are produced in Malaysia, and was suspicious on that note alone. I am going to make sure that what I switch to, is a product that is made in the USA. DAMN DAMN DAMN AVODERM !!!

      They are made in Thailand. And there is no proof avocadoes caused that to happen to your cat.

    Has a vet told you that this is an indication of a problem with the food? There are certain ingredients in this food that would do that, mainly the Avocado. This has nothing at all to do with the quality of the food. I used Wellness Core and my Cats were no where near as healthy as with the Avoderm. I asked my vet about this and she said that there is no correlation between the smell of a cat’s BM and their health. It is what is in the food, period.

    When a bowl movement is big and smelly it is obviously the food. A good food will
    be absorbed by the system and bowl movement will be smaller. It will also not smell so bad that you have to write about it.

    I suggest Wellness. It is the best. You will have smaller movements and little odor.

    Just want to comment that after consuming several bags of this food, my cat’s bowel movements are very big and very, very smelly. Much worse than when he ate Taste of the Wild. I am switching back as soon as he finishes up this bag.

      I thought it was just me. My 2 girls love Avoderm and their coats are glossy, but the litterbox is disgusting. I clean poop as soon as I find it, but the odor permeates the house and lingers for hours even with air freshener. The odor is strong enough to wake me up – and their box is quite a distance away from the bedroom. The younger cat also has dragon breath with this food. Too bad since they really enjoy it. Back to Natural Balance.
