This recall is brought to you by the Dog Food Reviews section of PetFoodTalk.com. We are giving your permission and encouraging you to post this on your blog to alert your readers.

On December 18th, 2010, Kroger issued an official recall of many of its pet food products which are sold under a variety of brand names. This pet food recall includes both dog food and cat food.

Why Is Kroger Issuing This Recall?

According to current information, Kroger initiated this recall due to the possibility that the recalled formulas were contaminated with Aflatoxin.

What is Aflatoxin?

Aflatoxin is a naturally occurring toxin that is produced by a type of fungus. Aflatoxin may be present in grains while they are waiting to be processed into pet food products. Some of the crops that are routinely affected by aflatoxin include sorghum, rice, wheat, soybeans, corn and millet. Aflatoxins are one of the most carcinogenic substances known to scientists today.

What Are the Symptoms of Aflatoxin in my Pet?

Kroger has stated that there are a variety of symptoms that could signal that a pet has eaten food contaminated with aflatoxin. The symptoms are:

  1. Lethargy/Sluggishness
  2. Yellowish Eyes
  3. Yellowish Gums
  4. Lack of Interest in Food
  5. Bloody Diarrhea
  6. Severe Diarrhea

If your pet has any of these symptoms, you should contact your veterinarian immediately to schedule an emergency appointment. Aflatoxin can potentially cause serious health complications and may sometimes be fatal to pets.

I have always fed my dogs purina pro plan chicken and rice. The last two bags I bought from Kroger in Georgia were the casue of severe reactions on both dogs including wimpering, gas, puffy red eyes, red puffy ears with discharge and after the last large feeding, because I thought they were just hungry and needed more food, my busters rear end became severly inflammed and bloody.

Yesterday, I stopped feeding him the pro plan from kroger and all symptoms immedaitely stopped.

I hope this helps others because I was taking them to the vet and racked up $500 plus dollars in vet bills. Buster almost died one night when he wouldnt sit still and kept wimpering, then he had a violent seizure.

I have 5 dogs that have died in 2 months, all the symtoms of this infection, I bought 2 bags a week of the 50lb ole yeller all this tr, so how do I know some of those bags were not contaminated and caused the deaths of those dogs that I LOVED with all my heart? I call my local kroger here in Tupelo, and was told NO WAY to know if I had bought them, I have recipts, but they have no codes on them, so what can I do to find out? this was a terrible process, bloody stool, diaherra, throwing up then death, I went to the vet got meds, antibiotics, 4 lived that we treated and 5 more including puppies died.. I need to know when this was in the stores, the only brand i have bought is ole yeller in almost a year.. so more than likely I got a couple bad bags, now what can I do????

I buy my cats’ food at Kroger, and I am wondering if the Kroger Value brand canned cat food is a part of this recall, or is it only the dry cat food? Is there any indication that the canned cat food also contains aflatoxin? Please reply ASAP, as I need to go buy their food this afternoon when I get off work.

    Thanks
