Evangers Dog Food Recall

As of right now, Evangers dog food has not been involved in a pet food recall, and is not currently listed on the FDA’s pet food recall list.     Less than 2 hours after eating Evangers Hunk of Beef canned dog food and nothing else, my perfectly healthy and active 2-yr old golden retriever started to experience ataxia (clumsiness and dizziness) and weakness in his hind legs. A trip to the local hospital and then immediately to a more sophisticated university veterinary hospital where I carried his then practically unconscious body into the ER resulted in a diagnosis of acute barbituate overdose based on a urine sample test. They told me that he could very possibly be blind and could suffer brain damage – assuming he survived. A more detailed tox screen test came back a week or so later and proved phenobarbital as the culprit. Thankfully, the docs were able to flush his system and after 3 days of ER and ICU (and $4000), my somewhat lethargic golden returned home with me. He has appeared to recover fully, although a followup neurological exam is recommended. Put simply, these days, phenobarbitol is used to euthanize animals. There is no way that he had access to that drug or anything like it in the hours before he exhibited symptoms – he was under my full control during that period. I am 100% convinced the beef used in the Evanger’s food was improperly rendered and was so raw and loaded with drugs from the slaughterhouse, that it was unsuitable for any other creature to ingest. Never again will I buy Evanger’s food, and I will actively alert as many people as I can to also stop using it. There is obviously no QC at this food plant, and a $4 can of dog food just about killed my dog. If I didnt actually throw away the can I would have had it tested and then sued Evanger’s for not only the hospital costs but for the extreme emotional distress. Put this company out of business just like they almost killed my dog. Google Evanger’s Hunk of Beef and look at some of the other comments over the years – there is evidence that this is an ongoing problem, and all things considered, that’s all I needed to read.

    I’ve raised dogs my whole life, and never had any health problems arise. However, there were always occasions of skin irritations, or hotspots, flakes, dander, etc. from time to time.

    Since I tried Evangers, and made the switch full-time with my lab and husky, I have not had any such issues.

    I lost my Lab of 13 years last fall, and purchased another Chocolate lab a few months later. He has been on Evangers since 8 weeks, and my Husky has been on it for the last 3 years now.

    Evangers is HANDS DOWN far and away the BEST dog food I have ever seen or used. I am aware of the complaint from the FDC. More telling is the letter saying they corrected the mislabel issue the very next inspection.
    The hunk of beef is literally a hunk of shoulder roast that I think is probably edible for human consumption. The chicken thighs are whole thighs, in almost a chicken broth soup.
    I like seeing the make-up of the food. The whole meats assures we can see what’s in there.
    Regardless, just in my dogs behavior and growth, it is well worth any higher costs. They eat immediately upon the bowl getting placed on the ground, and lick the bowl clean. They are in top shape, and very good dogs.

    Honestly, I would eat the hunk of beef of hand packed chicken. It looks and smells that good. My dog really cant get enough of it, and being all natural makes me feel better. Hope the bad PR passes, because it is good food.

      I haven’t eaten the hunk of beef but a friend that feeds it told me that one time for lunch he had no food and decided to eat it. Its human grade and nothing else in it and fresh! So I couldn’t judge Haha but since I’m vegetarian I tried the sweet potato and it was really sweet and pretty good.

      On behalf of my 2 dogs that eat the whole chicken thighs and hunk of beef and some dry or sweet potato, they have never turned up their noses. Ive had them fand3 and 4 years and they have never been sick and go in for their annual check up. As healthy as a dog could be.

      Between me and the dogs, agreed. I think evangers has a really good line of foods and its all natural and healthy. There is nothing bad I can say about it. I’m thankful that evangers has made owning a pet so easy.

    i have a 14 yr old chihuahua. i feed her evanger’s canned organic turkey w/ potato and carrots dinner and evanger’s canned low fat vegetarian, about 1/2 each in the morning and a clove of roasted garlic. at night she gets a small quantity of raw organic chicken, some homemade sweet potato, chick peas and brown rice, and a bit of flax meal. she is a lively, cheerful healthy dog with a lovely coat and bright eyes. of course, i don’t know if she is thriving because of her diet, or in spite of it.

    I’ve now been feeding my Golden Retriever Evanger’s canned foods for about one year. He is now seven and a half years of age. I mostly stick to the Hunk-o-Beef, Whole Chicken Thighs, or Salmon formulas because I can see exactly what I’m getting. This is normally mixed in with a liberal quantity of a high grade kibble, generally Innova Red Meats. My dog seems to love the flavors and seldom leaves any food in his bowl. He was raised by my daughter who had fed him low quality kibbles filled with allergens, causing him to scratch constantly. Since I’ve owned him and with the improved diet those allergies have disappeared. So far I am satisfied with the quality of Evanger’s foods and have no complaints.

    FDA Warning letter (May 2011) stating that Evangers lamb dog food was tested and did not contain lamb, and the duck food didn’t contain duck…
