Pet owner Frank Lucido has filed a class-action lawsuit in California against Nestle Purina PetCare Company, claiming that Beneful contains toxins have made thousands of dogs sick or even resulted in death. The suit lists propylene glycol and mycotoxins as the substances that are probably the most harmful in the food.
The Lucido family placed their three dogs in three different houses, because they were doing renovations on their home. The one constant is that the dogs were eating Beneful dry kibble dog food beginning in late December or Early January. All three dogs became sick by the end of January, and one of the dogs died. Symptoms included malfunction or liver failure, stomach internal bleeding, diarrhea, weight loss, and vomiting.
Purina believes that the lawsuit is baseless, and that “there are no quality issues with Beneful.”
Beneful is just plainly disgusting. Why can’t people just take a little bit more time to read what’s in this. Almost all of the stuff they put in are low quality, inferior sh**t: by-products, toxic chemicals, useless cheap sugars. People just fall for the gimicky advertising… When I see people with faaat dogs – full money is they are fed Beneful.

Propylene Glycol (PG) to most people and they will probably tell you that it is a toxin. On the other hand, PG comes in more than one formulation, so it needs to be clarified as to which formulation is meant.
The real question is, does it make a difference which one is used, since it is used in everything from hydraulic and brake fluid to snack foods?
The answer is: it does and it doesn’t. It is a toxin regardless of which strength is used. Propylene Glycol is a form of mineral oil, an alcohol produced by fermentation of yeast and carbohydrates. This gives it the designation of carbohydrate when used in foods.
Because it comes in several grades, PG has been used for a variety of uses. Industrial grade PG is used as an active ingredient in engine coolants and antifreeze; airplane de-icers; polyurethane cushions; paints, enamels and varnishes; and in many products as a solvent or surfactant. In all fairness, it should be stated that PG was only added to anti-freeze to replace Ethylene Glycol. It had been a problem because dogs often lap up puddles of anti-freeze.
Same thing is that a lot of us remember this name of dog food from when we were kids due to most likely our parents feed it to our dogs. Sad thing is all dog food needs to be monitored even the food we pay top dollar for at our Vets.!
Let’s not get carried away here. Propylene Glycol (PG) is also used in asthma inhalers, etc. and is GRAS (Generally recognized as safe) by the FDA. Studies (http://jpet.aspetjournals.org/content/91/1/52.abstract) show that it’s safe for animals.
There are much more disturbing ingredients in Beneful that we should be more concerned about (eg mycotoxins).
I have feeding my dogs beneful since it came out as they proclaimed it to be a great dog food.
Last year around July 2014 my 2 dogs, a pug and a pit-bull, started throwing up and losing weight and getting listless.peeing blood,There eyes were getting cloudy. The pug started spinning in circles like she was going mad.chewing on her tail, she chewed a hole right thru her tail.
I had also been feeding them the same treats for years. I contacted both the treat company and the dog food company asking if they had changed there formula or added new ingredients. response from the treat company out of Utah stated no changes to their product but please send the rest back for testing. only response from dog food maker was sorry to hear your pets are sick hope they get better soon. In DEC changed there food and pit-bull is gaining weight back but the pug is not. There eyes are clearing up. Pug has been on meds and the cone of shame since July. her vet is baffled. she is there at least once a month and he says may be nerve damage. I am beginning to think it was the dog food that has ruined my pug.
My dog use to eat Beneful dog food and I did not put two and two together for the longest time but he was constantly vomiting and sleeping a lot. Since I took him off of that food he has not been sick once. My dog eats 4 health brand dog food now and he is doing much better. I read the labels now and am pickier on what goes in his mouth. I rescued him off the streets 9 yrs ago and he is my best buddy, I dont know what I would do if anything ever happened to him. I also am careful on the treats I feed him. Some of these food companies are all about money and dont care about the product.
we just lost our 9 year old Pomeranian due to kidney failure. Vet thinks ethylene glycol intoxication. She was being fed nothing but beneful original. Opened new sack of Beneful week before dog got sick . No other source of toxin possible . Convinced it had to be in the food. Law suits won’t bring back my precious Foxie but getting the word out might save some dogs.
