Our Analysis

Solid Gold claims to make holistic and natural dog food, and after a good look at their ingredient lists we concur. The main ingredient in most of their blends is animal meat. Chicken meal, lamb, beef, and turkey are used as the main ingredients in the various formulas. Other healthy ingredients on the list include ocean fish for added protein, brown rice, which is easy to digest, flaxseed meal for omega-3 fatty acids, fruits and vegetables for fiber and carbohydrates, and chelated minerals.

The food contains plenty of animal-based proteins, which dogs need for energy and vitamins. In addition, there are no cheap grain fillers such as corn, wheat, or soy. Overall, this is a very healthy dog food that goes above and beyond generic dog food brands by using natural, high quality ingredients. We highly recommend this brand, especially the Barking at the Moon formula, which is a high-protein, low-carbohydrate food for a balanced diet.

The Word on the Street...

Dog owners love Solid Gold Dog Food for the healthy ingredients, grain-free formulas, and the decent price. Many claim that their dogs exhibit shinier coats and eyes, better muscle tone, and increased energy levels after switching to this food. The grain-free formulas mean that even dogs that experience allergies from foods can eat this brand without suffering stomach upset.

The healthy levels of animal fat make this food taste and smell great for dogs as well. Furthermore, the foil packaging keeps the food fresh for longer. Some dog owners reported that their pets had smellier stools and diarrhea after eating this food, but these owners seem to be in the minority. The majority of customers who bought this food have nothing bad to say about it. The price is average for a high-protein dog food, and the natural ingredients mean that dogs get the appropriate amount of vitamins and minerals they need for a balanced, nutritious diet.

Wow, I was afraid of this. My 14 yr old Staffordshire Terrier has been eating the Solid Gold “Holistique Blendz” variety and also started on a slow decline after the rebranding! We first noticed an obscene amount of drinking. At first, we thought that maybe it was his kidneys from old age. Then it was the random bouts of sickness. He would get diarrhea and have house accidents for a day and then seem to bounce back. This last round was the worst. House accidents, mucous in the stool, vomiting, lethargic. We brought him to the vet, did a bunch of blood work, put him on Hill’s Prescription ID and a diarrhea based antibiotic. After just 2 feedings he starting to bounce back to his normal self. His water drinking even returned to normal! After 5 days we started mixing the Solid Gold back into his diet, starting at only half his normal serving and half Hill’s. Immediately he started drinking water excessively again! That’s when I started doing some research and found this website! This was originally a mom and pop quality company with high standards. I wonder if they let someone else take it over, hence the drastic change. Either way, they lost a customer.

I have been feeding my pet the canned and dry wee bits dog food for 7 years now. I have recommended it to other family members with pets and have been satisfied until these months my dog has been very sick, bloody stools, vomiting, lethargic. I just found out the other dogs and cats eating it have been very ill as well. Vet has recommended to stop use of this food. Have written to Solid gold twice and haven’t received any response. Just that all food is made on East coast now. New packaging, pay attention, will this irreparably harm your loved ones? I’m crying as I’m writing this as a warning to others. Please take notice. I am a worried pet parent that is hoping that my min pin heals.

We’ve used this product for years. For last 3 months since the ingredients change we’ve had to coach all of them to eat it, add other thing s like soft food etc. We’ve also had a problem with runny and mucousey stool and sudden accidents in the house. As of this week all 3 are refusing to touch it. We’re done.

I have been feeding my dog solid gold hund n flocken for 8 years. Have just started feeding her the “new” version (with new packaging). Since then, she has been throwing up and/or hiding in a corner. Thinking that perhaps changed the ingredients as well, I put her on a boiled chicken and rice diet. I’ve tried to slowly re-introduce Solid Gold to her, without any better results. I have purchased a different brand of dog food today and hope this takes care of the issue. It is such a shame since we’ve had great success with Solid Gold in the past.

My Yorkie has been on Solid Gold for about ten years now and she loves it. My cat is also on it for the same amount of time and she too loves it. I like that its healthy and the treats are too. I will never use another dog or cat food. My Yorkie is 15 and my cat is 16 and they both act like they are 5. Full of energy. I highly recommend this dog food. I use the Green bag, Holistic blend. I also like that they haven’t had any recall scares, I never have to worry about this food. I give them five stars all day, everyday. The price is a little high but its worth every penny to know my babies are eating healthy. My Yorkie even eats her dryfood as treats if I run out of her treats. ♥♥♥♥♥

We rescue Golden Retrievers and due to allergies in 2 of our permanent fosters, we were forced to switch the main source of protien from chicken to Lamb and Rice formulas late last year (2013). We began feeding Natural Balance and noticed an improvement in the itching and with the coat quality in general- however, most all of the senior dogs began to gain significant weight. After much research and being sold on the quality, we began feeding Solid Gold “Hund-n-Flocken” recipe which turned out to be an easy transition.. all the dogs love it and we’ve noticed the weight issues are no longer a problem due to the lower fat content. Solid Gold can be very expensive at the local pet store but after looking online, we found discounts and free shipping which made it comperable in price to the other premium foods we were feeding prior to the switch. So far, so good. Everybody’s happy with the new Solid Gold dry.

We have been feeding our 16 month old Bernese Mountain Dog Solid Gold Wolf King for around 6 months.Prior to that, Wolf Cub. He loves the food, has a beautiful shiny coat that people often comment on, including his vet. He is full of energy and is happy. He had some digestive troubles before we switched to Solid Gold at
around 4 months. He seemed to have trouble with Chicken based food. The Bison seems to be working well for him. We are very happy with it.

  • Loretta

I feed both my dog and cats grain-free Solid Gold. My 10 yr. old Bichon Frise has fatty lumps on his chest. I read that totally grain-free food (not even rice or barley) can help dissolve these lumps. It’s true. I have been feeding Solid Gold Sun Dancer dry food along with his grain-free canned food, and the lumps are smaller in only 3 weeks. I also have a young male cat that suffered from blood in his urine for over a year. The vet didn’t have any answers even after tests and antibiotics. I read about nutrition and decided to try grain-free food. Many didn’t work, and I figure it’s because they still contained rice and/or barley, but once I fed him Solid Gold Indigo Moon dry food, the blood in his urine was gone within a week! I was pleasantly surprised. Our pets are not designed to digest grains, and mine are living proof.

We have been buying Wolf Cub for a year for our Airedale puppy. It’s been great. I noticed today that the new bags are 28.5 lbs instead of 33 lbs at the same price, that’s a 15% increase. Are there any recommendations for an alternate high quality food?

  • Amanda

I feed my pitbull puppy the wolf cub and my 3 year old pitbull the wolf king. After getting my puppy they had been feeding her puriana puppy chow her stools were very runny, very smelly, and she had to go 2 to 3 times after she ate. After 2 weeks of feeding her the wolf cub she will go 1 to 2 times but the consistency is normal and barely any smell. My older pit has been on it since he was a puppy. Also I believe it satisfies there urge for real meat and therefore they do not try to escape to find it. My 3 year old has never had any health problems what so ever. You can find solid gold at any PETCO.

  • Jennifer

Dawn, I have used Solid Gold before and had to quit because it was hard to find. I just recently purchased the Solid Gold Hund n Flocken Adult again for my three dogs (2 cocker spaniels and a mix boxer/shar pei). All three have had loose stools and fowl gas. My mix breed won’t even touch her last bowl. Never happened before. Prior to that we were on a raw food but it’s so expensive. I’m going to have to switch out again and do so gradually.

  • Amy

I have fed my dog solid gold dry dog food since he was a puppy. I have mixed other canned food into it, but have always tried to pick naturally made, wholesome ingredients (brands such as Merrick, Evangers, Lotus, Solid Gold). I am happy to say that my dog just turned 11 years old and still looks like a younger dog. His groomer is astounded at how thick his coat is and how healthy he is. He does have some arthritis in his hips, but this is normal for larger breed dogs who aren’t very active. I hope this has helped.

The best dog food around. My dog Snickers loves this blend of food. This dog food stretches for the $$$ price. I feed him half and cup with some warm water. Then the second half later in the day.
What an awsome brand. I sooo glad I came across it.
His fur is long, soft and shiny as a havanese / lahsa apso should be.

My husband and I have a 7 month old Chow Chow. We switched to Solid Gold puppy formula around 3 months. Chows cannot have high protein in their diets it makes there skin dry, itchy, and flaky. Solid Gold Hundchen Flocken Puppy food has no wheat, no soybeans, no corn, no animal fat, no poultry fat, no by-products, no sugar added, no artificial preservatives added, no salt, and no sunflower oil. Solid Gold lamb dry puppy food is great for Chows. It is made with Lamb, Millet, Amaranth, Barley, Brown Rice, and full with vitamins, & minerals. We were shocked that some of the best 2012 high quality dog food on the market right now.. first ingredients on that package are Corn, Corn Gluten Meal, Animal Fat, etc… These ingredients are not good for dogs at all. My husband and I did a lot of research and found Solid Gold. We are very happy with their products. Our Chow has a very nice shiny coat, and is growing very healthy. I would highly recommend this brand to anyone that has a dog or thinking of getting a dog. We will always purchase Solid Gold.

  • Elizabeth

My Rottweiler puppy loves her Wolf Cub food and I’ve seen her coat become shinier as a result. She was being fed something else before I got her. The attention to using the highest quality ingredients reassures me as well. I highly recommend it.

I found the dogs do not really like the food that much. It is very expensive and I generally have to mix it with another cheaper food. It is very high in protien (40%) However it is good protiens which are easily digestible. I didn’t see any change in the gereral condition as I had hoped. This is the Barking at the Moon formula.
I used Imam’s as the vet suggessted…and wasn’t impressed… Purina … and felt one of the better was Science Diet. My favorite to feed is Royal Canin but it is VERY expensive and hard to get here unless you go to a pet center.

Hi, my lab mix and pit mix have been eating Solid Gold Hund-n-Flocken Adult for 4-5 years. They have done very well with it until recently. With the last two bags the food looks and smells slightly different. Also both of my dogs are having more bowel movements and drinking more water than usual. No changes have been made to their diets on my end. Does anyone know anything about this or had a similar experience?

      • Kimberly

I also noticed a difference in the appearance and odor of their when returning to it in Jan. 2013. I have large breed dogs who did not respond well to the bison or lamb (immediate diahrea, foul smelling fecal and constant gas ). I researched further and found inconsistencies in Solid Gold’ ingredient lists on their bags and the ingredients posted on their website on both lamb and bison brands. This left me unconfident as a consumer. I emailed and called the company to inquire and they were non-responsive. I switched to Castor Pullox Organics, the dogs immediately responded well and I feel more confident in this brands credibity.
