Our Analysis

Eukanuba Dog Food is a well-known brand that touts its brand as high quality and sponsors prestigious dog shows. Unfortunately, when you scrutinize the label of their dog food products, you realize it may not be so healthy for your dog. Eukanuba only received a 3 star rating from us because of the low quality ingredients that are used in most of the the foods. Eukanuba does make some foods (such as the Lamb and Rice Dry Formula, and the Naturally Wild Dry Formulas) that do contain meats as the first ingredient, but even with this, the food is not high quality.

One of the main ingredients in Eukanuba dog food is corn meal. While on the surface, corn does not seem like a bad ingredient but the corn used in dog food products is the same corn that is labeled as not fit for human consumption. Another main ingredient is chicken. This sounds healthy to most pet owners, but unfortunately, chicken by-product meal is leftover parts of the chicken after the prime parts are removed.

The remaining ingredients are a host of fillers with little nutritional value. While on the surface, Eukanuba Dog Food may seem like a healthy choice for your dog, once you read the label you realize it is similar to generic store brands. That being said, Eukanuba’s products contain above average levels of protein, fat and are low in carbohydrates. The Naturally Wild formulas contain high levels of wild proteins, such as turkey, venison and salmon. Overall, if buying Eukanuba Dog Food, the Naturally Wild products are the best bet.

The Word on the Street...

Despite their huge presence on the market, some buyers believe Eukanuba canned food and kibbles are made with inferior products. A quick look at the ingredients does in fact point to an abundance of meat by-products, fillers (such as wheat gluten), brewers rice and sugar beets. The lack of probiotics in the mix is also a con.

Many of the reviewers found that their dogs had a negative reaction (such as itchy skin or diarrhea) after eating Eukanuba. There are some dog owners who say that it is a fantastic food for their dog, but for most people the low quality of the food is not something that they want their dog to eat.

For these reasons, a good amount of the customer reviews are negative. People are somewhat disappointed with this product.

So many negative reviews and I got this recommendation straight from AKC. :(

I was having a lot of problems with my Bavarian mountain hound pup, my farm feed rep recommended Eukanuba and from that point on there was no looking back. I have just got myself a Teckel pup and he will be going onto Eukanuba puppy as soon as possible. A highly palatable ration that dogs will thrive on.

My English bull terrier ate Euka his whole life. He lived until he was 16.5. When I brought home my dachshund I was very confused by the bad reviews of Euka since my bull terrier lived so long. I compromised. I give the doxie Euka mixed with a highly touted natural dog food. I couldn’t abandon the Euka after the bull terrier seemed to do so well on it. You have to find what your dog likes and thrives on, I think.

I have been using eukanuba for years I have raised 2 pittbulls a ppormaraniam and a chihuahua on it and they all have never been to the vet other than for there routine vaccination . Love this brand and so do my dogs .

  • Becky

We have raised 2 English Mastiffs, 1 Bullmastiff, and 2 Great Pyrenees on Eukanuba Large Breed varieties. All have been exceptionally healthy with beautiful hair and skin and have lived longer than the average. We’re sticking with success.

I feel the exact same way!!! I just lost my Brittany that was with us for 16 3/4 years. He outlived his life expectancy by far, very far….12 to 13 yrs is the average life span for that breed! Sam ate Eukanuba for his whole life. From a puppy to a very old senior! He was a picture of health and beauty! His teeth, skin, coat and bone and muscle mass were in excellent condition. As he aged yes, his body did change as all living things do in time. But not until the last 2 years. At 15 is when he begin to slow down and then eventually could not do what he used to. Lost the ability to jump and was not of course as mobil as he use to be. But for 15 of his almost 17 yrs, his health was outstanding! I now have a rescue pup. He is 4 months, we got him when he was 8 weeks. Guess what I am feeding him, EUKANUBA Natural Lamb & Rice puppy formula. Sam loved his food and now so does Murphy. Murphy is a mixed breed. Boxer, Lab, possibly German Shepherd. So the purebred Brittany and the mixed breed dog both feel the same way…they loved and love Eukanuba!! Hopefully we will have the longitivy of life with our new boy, 17 or more years!!! =)

My pug is 4, she was on Royal Canin before, but she decided she no longer wants to eat it.
I then moved to Eukanuba, & a since switching, she’s constantly scratching herself, her hair is thinning on her chest & she constantly licks her legs & paws. I’m assuming this must be an allergic reaction of some sort?

  • Vanessa Diaz

I used to feed my puppies eukanuba the puppy one. Now I recently moved and started feeding then beneful. I did not like the way the beneful was treating my dogs so I just recently switched back to eukanuba and started feeding them the adult kind for small breed dogs and my dogs both have diarrhea for a few days now. I’m not sure what to do. Does any one have any answers for me?

  • Michele

We feed the Eukanuba puppy formula to our shar pei beagle mix and she has no problems on it.

    • Judi

She’s still a puppy, just hang on, she will start itching and showing other signs of allergic reactions to the GMO corn.
You love that baby, she deserves better food.

  • Karina

My dogs still won’t leave the food. They leave it but then I may sneeze, shift slitglhy, or they may get distracted by a noise outside and then its back to square one. I’ve been trying for weeks and its so frustrating. They also won’t look at my face. Only at the clicker or food. Can anyone help me?

  • Hatem

who said that this food is not good?? i’m living in the UAE and i feed my 2 Rott with Eukanuba. my Rotts love Euk more than me. This food makes there coat shiny and looks very healthy and the stool is small and smells less. This food is extremely excellent and i dont know why all this war against it.

  • JeniferRVT

Hello, my name is Jenifer and I work for Eukanuba – I thought I would clear up some misconceptions about some of the ingredients we use.

Chicken by-product meal may include stuff that people have a cultural aversion to eating; but that doesn’t make it a bad source of protein. It is an excellent and complete source of protein because it provides each of the amino acids that are essential to good nutrition for dogs and cats.

Not every chicken by-product meal is as good as ours. Our chicken by-product meal is muscle and internal organs (including intestines) that have been cleaned, dried, cooked, and ground. By industry definition, chicken by-product meal can contain the feet of the chicken – but that’s not an acceptable source of protein for us, so our suppliers make every effort to keep the feet out of our chicken by-product meal.

What is Brewers Rice? It is the small fragments of rice kernels that have been separated from the larger kernels of milled rice and classified as US #4 Brewer’s rice. Is there a difference between Brewers Rice and Rice Flour? Nutritionally, no. Rice kernels that are whole are used in the human food industry because of the appearance. Everyone likes to see intact, whole-grain rice. When those very same rice kernels are broken, it’s not as appealing to people. Those broken kernels are very good for the brewing industry, though. Hence the name, “brewer’s rice.”

Whole corn, such as corn from the cob, might be difficult to digest. However, we use high-quality corn that is finely ground (breaking up the outside bran covering), and cooked. When prepared in our manufacturing facilities, corn is highly digestible and provides dogs and cats with high-quality carbohydrates for essential energy.

If you would like more information on any of our formulas, please email us: http://bit.ly/ContactEuk or call us 1-888-EUKANUBA M-F 9am – 6pm EST.

    Thank you! Jenifer,RVT

Our 4 year old Vizsla, before now, never exhibited any allergic symptoms. For the last 3 days he’s constantly scratching himself all over. Last night he finished his first 15 lb bag of Eukanuba “Natural Formula,” toted as 100% High Quality (corn meal is listed as 3rd ingredient). This food is the only new thing introduced to our dog at this time and it seems more than likely the cause of his allergy. Needless to say we won’t be purchasing this brand again.

    • Jay

What product do you use for your dog?

  • Mike Pace

I have been feeding my lab puppy large breed formula since I brought her home in March. Her skin and coat look great! I plan on sticking with this brand.

  • Debbie McGee

I have been feeding Eukanuba to my 17 year old weimer since she was a puppy with great results. I got concerned when your reviews said that corn was first ingredient, but after looking at all the Eukanuba in my pet store only the weight control products have corn as 1st ingredient. Store told me Eukanuba use corn meal along with sorguhm and barley to help even out a dog’s glucose level thru the day which helps maintain a healthy weight all other Eukanuba items had chicken, lamb, venision, turkey or salmon as first ingredient. I think I will stick with what has been working great for 17 years.

  • Patty Tusay

I have been using Euk since 1985 for all of my schnauzers -lamb & rice. It has been a lifesaver for all have colitis. I have had no issues and my dogs lived to 18, 15 respectively. I am afraid to change the brand…as all love it…

  • Terri

I’ve been feeding my dog this food for 1 1/2 years and now he’s itchy after eating and having loss of hair. This has never happened before and it started after we brought the large bag of dry dog food. Going to change my dogs food today I feel like a bad mother for not picking up on this before.

    • 7and7is

I have the same problem with Euk and just bought the dogs a bag of Taste of the Wild. Thje little rat terrier is blowing her hair and itchy all over. Euk used to be a great food and we kept our show dogs on it…they blossomed. Time and money has turned it into a step above grocery store food

More Information

Eukanuba Dog Food, which is owned by Procter and Gamble, only received a 2 star rating from us because of the low quality ingredients that are used in most of the the foods. Eukanuba does make some foods (such as the Lamb and Rice Dry Food, and the Naturally Wild Dry Food) that do contain meats as the first ingredient, but even with this, the food is not a high quality.

The website states that the Eukanuba dog foods do not use fillers. While this may be technically true, most of the foods use ingredients in the food (such as brewers rice) which have no nutritional value and are used as fillers. The ingredients in Eukanuba dog food formulas are mostly of low quality, and include a large percentage of carbohydrates. Although some of the foods do have some form of protein for the main ingredients, the actual source of protein is the beef by-products and chicken by-products, that are contained in each meal. The foods also include a large amount of corn, brewers rice, brewers yeast and a lot of salt.

Who Makes Eukanuba?

The company who makes Eukanuba dog food is called Iams, which is owned by Procter & Gamble. The Eukanuba brand of pet food has been sold by Iams since 1969. It was Paul Iams who first chose “eukanuba” for this brand of pet food. He chose the name in order to differentiate Eukanuba from other foods, and to introduce a name that was “memorable”. Eukanuba is an interjection that is loosely interpreted as “something supreme”.

Eukanuba Dog Food Recall

Eukanuba dog food was one of the primary brands involved in the 2007 melamine pet food recall. Currently, Eukanuba still has many brands listed on the FDA’s pet food recall website, mostly canned formulas that use gravy. However, before feeding your dog any Eukanuba formula, it’s highly recommended that you check the FDA’s pet food recall list for any recent updates.
