Our Analysis

The formula for Canidae dog food overall is above average or good compared to similar brands.

The three highest ingredients listed are all meat or poultry meals, a concentration with all water removed that contains three times the protein of fresh meat. The poultry meals are considered to be a very good addition to most dog foods. The next three ingredients are all rice, including brown and white rice and rice bran.

The food has higher rice content than ideal, which is partly why the food is rated as good and not excellent – a lower rice content and higher meat content would be better. The vegetable protein content is low, which is ideal; the only vegetable protein included is peas, which are legumes that also provide carbohydrates and fiber. Other ingredients include potato, oatmeal and barley, as well as chicken fat, all of which are quality ingredients in dog food.

Overall, Canidae is a good dog food that can be recommended for most dogs.

The Word on the Street...

Canidae dog food includes a number of outstanding formulas that customers are largely satisfied with. The Canidae line includes foods for all life stages and a Platinum formula intended for maintenance in older dogs or sedentary dogs.

It includes a relatively high protein content, all coming from concentrated meat meals such as chicken, turkey and lamb. Customers appreciate the protein content and the low amount of vegetable proteins, which some older or more sensitive dogs have trouble digesting correctly.

The food does include peas, but these are palatable and easily handled by most dogs, and also provide a source of carbohydrates and natural fiber.

Canidae ALS has a high rice content, so customers with dogs that have issues handling rice or are prone to food allergies should avoid these foods.

However, most dogs do well on the nutrition provided by Canidae, prompting their owners to rate it as an above average to good dog food.

    Hello to all,

I’m hoping that the good folks that give us these excellent reviews would take a look at the Wegman’s house brand:

“Wegmans Simply from Nature Chicken & Brown Rice Recipe Natural Dog Food”.
I’ve read their ingredient list several times and their back story about the product development. Overall their quality of merchandise at their stores is exceptional. My 120Lb Rottweiler “Brutus” has been having a combo of one can and 1 cup of the kibble for a breakfast snack for several months now. He likes it and his health is great. Dinner time he gets a family pack of fresh chicken thighs with some rice or potatoes.
    Cheers
    Tim & Brutus

A quick note, after having dogs for years, I have found out that issues with dog food, dogs getting gas, itching, loose stools etc. are 99.9% not the fault of the food in itself. The fault lies with the dog. Either it be allergies to the ingredients or the dogs system just can’t handle the food. You cannot tell people not to feed a certain dog food because YOUR dog had a problem with it. The reason why I take reviews I see posted here with a grain of salt.

I have acquired a Vizsla with IBS so I have been trying different dog foods that are easy to digest and for sensitive stomachs. I came across Canidae Pure and figured I’d give it a try. It seems to have solved her problems but it’s too expensive for me to feed all 6 of my dogs so for now she is the only one getting it. I may try Blue or Wellness. Not sure they would be any less expensive tho.

We fed this food for years.. Suddenly our dogs would not eat it anymore.. We have 5 dogs, all 5 of them started scratching their faces so hard that their gums were getting red.. 2 females started losing their fur, one female started licking her belly so much that she was making it all raw.. We switched dog foods and all troubles are gone. I used to recommend this food to everyone.. Now I tell people to avoid it.. something has changed.. 5 dogs suddenly have problems, that are all fixed with a dog food change.. they are doing something differently.. We fed this food for probably 10 years, and this last summer we had to change.. too many issues..

    • Kim

I moved to this food because it was high in protein and low in preservatives and additives. I had great success until the last three bags. My german shepard is having the worst gas problems. I agree, something has changed…

      • Rachel

I’ve bought ALS for several years. This last bag… I don’t know what’s happened to the formula, although Canidae rep’s assure me nothing has changed, and they haven’t gotten any other complaints. My dogs’ stomach and my nose tell me other wise!

Hopefully you are feeding her less of the Canidae Platinum than you were of her povierus food. You should be feeding for the weight you WANT, not the weight she is currently. You can use green beans for treats, too. Most dogs like them and Labs are not very picky in my experience. As to how to deal with her begging for food, you have to use some logic here. You know she is NOT starving she’s being appropriately nourished. If your kids asked for ice cream all day, would you give it to them? This is the same thing.Keep in mind that her arthritis will be greatly improved by getting back down to her correct weight. There will be much less stress on her joints. Frankly, her health and longevity will both be better if she’s kept at her proper weight. If it just eats you up to see her beg, try feeding her more frequently. You just divide the daily ration by the number of feedings you’re offering. Maybe you’ll feel better that way. You can give her attention without treats, too,

these different review sights are helpfull to me in letting me see if there is something i might have missed in the food i am feeding my 2 show Ch. vizslas 1 yr. old vizsla and Ch. smooth fox terrier. i am handycaped now and it is to hard to stand in the store turning bags over to check ingredients. just started feeding canidae 2 on als and 2 on platinum. how i did not pick up on how little meat protin in the platinum, must have been a senior moment. i will not buy it again.

I have one dog who loves this food and will not eat anything else, and another dog who will eat anything, so we just feed her a less expensive but good food. I am on a fixed budget, or else I would feed them both this food. I have to feed the Felix this since it is good for him and he won’t eat anything else.

  • mary

My dog is 12 years old and just sits around when we are not slowly walking around the neighborhood. I feed him the Platinum brand and he loves it and seems to be doing well.

My 3 yo yorkie loves the canned and dry food. I feed him the canned in the morning and the dry for dinner.

I have been feeding ALS for years and highly recommend it to all my puppy buyers.
I show and breed Austrailian Shepherds,

But when I had a problem with a new puppy I inquired, with very loose stools, after switching it very slowly to Canidea I tried to contact the company in an email. I never heard back from them.
I even belong to thei breeders program.
I simply ask if they had any suggestions to maybe try one of their other formulas? And mum was the word.
Needless to say I was very disapointed in the PR Department.
Yes I am still feeding Canidea. And I did get the loose stool problem resolved without their help.

I have been researching other brands of dog food mostly due to the lack of communication from Canidea. But have not found anything that I feel safe changing to after reading all the reviews and recalls.
